Wanted to hike up this unnamed peak as there was a geocache at the summit that I wanted to find. Parked near the Sycamore staging area and walked along State Route 87 till I was near the eastern side of the hill. The slope looked the easiest from here and it would allow me to avoid the large cliffs at the summit. Followed one of the washed up, before finding a fence that went all the way to cliffs. Followed it for a while till I found a good place to cross under it, then proceeded to make my way up and around the cliff face. This side of the hill was annoying covered with many slippery shale pieces. Kept slipping while walking on them, (it's time to get new shoes, the tread is worn down on my current hiking shoes), and fell once and heard my trekking pole snap near the base. Ended up having to spend $27 to get a replacement part from the company, cheaper than buying a brand new one, but still $27..... Soon made it to the top and signed the geocache logbook. Headed down following a gentler slope and eventually reached State Route 87. Hiked back to the staging area. Enjoyable hike in all, though I think I hiked more miles on State Route 87 then the mountain.

Been wanting to hike up here for awhile. Drove to the base of the mountain, between two shooting ranges and started my ascent. First part included climbing over large volcanic rock before I reached the flat mesa. The flat mesa part was easy, with occasional travel through ankle high grasses. Soon made it to the base of the middle part. There is a faint trail, marked with cairns heading to the top, but it's not that apparent. View from the summit is nice, didn't find a summit log. There's a fair amount of graffiti / markings on the northern edge.

The hike was good, didn't particularly enjoy the nonstop gunfire the whole hike though. Best to hike when there's a fire ban in effect to avoid all the shooters.

Decided to hike up here and place a geocache at the summit. Parked near the "gun range" area and headed up. Had to go up from where I parked as there were people camping at the "gun range" and didn't want them to start shooting if I was on top of their shooting area. Started up and regretted not wearing pants, as that slowed my progress as I had to avoid cacti and catclaw the entire way up. Soon made it to the summit and found the summit lot. Signed the summit log and headed down. Ended up going straight down to the old stone dam, then followed the wash back to where I parked. Also found the wreckage of an ancient car buried in the wash area.

Been wanting to hike up here for the last two years, mostly to find a geocache that was near the summit, and finally found the day to make the hike up. Started around 11am and followed easier clock-wise route up. I know of the harder route up, but I didn't want to do it alone. The easier route is a trail, occasionally marked with cairns, that follows around the lower area of the mountain, till it heads up a wash area to the summit. I bushwhacked around the summit to the eastern end where the geocache was. After finding it, I headed to the summit following and occasionally losing the trail to the top. Even with the cairns, the eastern trail, is a bit difficult to follow. Found a summit log at the highpoint and signed that. Also found the medicinal wheel as I started heading back down, which was cool. Headed back down to the truck. Enjoyable hike in all, just wished it was less humid. It was %50 which I'm really not used too. Saw one other person on the trail, they were heading down as I was heading up.

Back here at Stewart Mountain to hike the other two peaks that I ran out of time to hike on 11/24/25. Found a much better way up this time. Taking a route just left of the wash, which was partially marked with cairns and faint trails. This is also the route that was mentioned in the NGS benchmark report page for the Stewart Mountain benchmark that is at the summit.

Made it to the saddle and headed up the main peak. Found the summit log and signed it, along with the station and reference mark 1 benchmark. I failed to find reference mark two, but I’m sure it’s still up there somewhere.

Headed back down to the saddle and hiked up the peak with the radio towers and reflector. The radio towers were normal, though the lock to the area was not locked. This is also the second time I’ve seen one of these reflectors. Though I’m still not sure what the purpose of them is. I continued up and found a wooden cross at the top. I’ve never noticed it from Bush highway, but I’ve always seen the reflector. Did not find a summit log.

Headed back down to the saddle and continued down to the old alignment via the wash. Was on all fours during most of the descent. Enjoyable hike in all.

Wanted to hike up the three peaks on Stewart Mountain. That did not happen as I underestimated how long the wash section would take and only had enough time to hike up the northeast peak / Peak 2939. The wash section wasn't particularly enjoyable, the rocks were slippery, had to test my weight on a few of the rocks to see if they would support me, avoided bees and the stuff, along with having to push past catclaw and other thorny bushes. Eventually made it to the saddle, after about an hour. Then headed up to Peak 2939, which also included navigating loose rocks and the stuff. Made it to the top and found the remains of a glass summit jar and no logbook in sight. At this point I decided I probably shouldn't attempt the other two peaks as I didn't want to hike down the wash in the dark and wasn't too keen on staying the night on the mountain either. So after a short break I headed back down. Going down was easier, included a lot of sliding down the rocks on my butt. Made it back to where I left the truck just as the sun had set over the horizon. I will be back to conquer the two remaining peaks, though hopefully I can find a better way up that doesn't require going up the wash.

Went on a group hike in the Sabino Canyon Area. We followed the Bear Canyon Trail westward till we hooked up to the Sabino Walkway Trail and followed that one north for a bit. Usually can't stop for geocaches on group hikes, but was given permission to find one near the base of that large stone structure (which I've been told used to be a water holding tank of sorts) and found Tucson's oldest active geocache, which was pretty cool. We then went down into Sabino Canyon and walked along the river for a bit, which had flowing water in it. We passed by the dam which had some water trickling over the top of it. We then followed an old asphalt road over a bridge then back to the new asphalt road and returned back via the Bear Canyon Trail.

Went hiking with a wellness recovery group in the Catalina State Park. The group brought their dog too so she got to joined us. We hiked along the Sutherland trail (for some reason OnX Backcountry showed it as the Bridle trail instead of the Sutherland trail, I'm not sure if they follow the same path since this is my first time at the Catalina State Park.) Since this was a group hike, I usually don't get to stop for geocaches, but the group leader gave me enough time to find one and that's good enough for me.

We followed the Sutherland trail for about 1.75 miles, which was rather sandy and partly in a dry wash, before turning onto a junction towards Romero Canyon and the wilderness. There was a sign that said no dogs and we had one, I would've turned around but it's a group hike and they wanted to go that way, so the dog joined us. We followed this for a bit towards the dry falls area. Saw some of the painted stones along the way and saw a crushed barrel under a few tons of rock at the base of the falls. I wonder how that got there? We hiked around this area, peaceful except for distant gunshots. Once the sun peaked over the mountains we headed back to the van.

I took photos and a .gpx track and uploaded them to here yesterday. Don't know how to attach them to this triplog since I changed the name once I realized this was not the Bridle Trail. Enjoyable hike in all. Would do again.

Hiked to the top of the Cockscomb to find some geocaches. Found the social trail leading up and followed it till I reached the ruins on the north face. Was having trouble trying to find a way up that didn't involve free climbing a 15' vertical wall. Eventually turned to googling and figured out that you have to follow the social trail to the NE side of the Cockscomb and there be a way to climb up. After the short climb I used some stone stairs to make it to the top. Enjoyed the views and found the geocaches, did not find a summit log, but found lots of evidence of people making fires up here. Returned the way I came and followed the trail back to the Aerie trailhead. From the summit of the Cockscomb you can see Doe Mtn, Mescal Mtn, Bear Mtn, Windmill Mtn, and others. Enjoyable hike in all.

Drove within about a mile of the base of Double Crater, probably could've driven closer but the road seemed a bit sandy. Followed FR 777 till I made it to the base after finding a geocache along the way. Hiked up the road cut, which gains about 300' in .2 miles, so a bit steep, and since it's a cinder cone you lose half a step for every step you take. Found a SOG Salute Mini knife halfway up. Made it to the rim and started heading up clockwise to the summit. Stopped near the eastmost high point and found a lonely geocache (last logged in September 2022). Soon made it to the summit and found the summit log, its a blue glass jar placed between two boulders. There are dates going as far back as 1976, so its been up here awhile. Continued the loop and headed back down, though I ended up on my butt twice on the way down. Soon made it back to where I left the truck. Enjoyable hike.

Decided to hike up here after college class. Drove the 35 miles from Flagstaff to the base of the mountain without incident, though rather slowly since I had my spare on (cracked the rim on main tire). Hiked up and planned to find the geocache in the crater, though halfway up I started feeling unwell, and ended up aborting the hike at the rim. Thought I was sick and drove back home, only to realize I was suffering from heat exhaustion. Total waste of four gallons of gas driving there and back and I wanted to hike Colten Crater too but of course that didn't happen. Oh well, I'll be back to hike those two craters someday, probably when it's cooler.

Hiked up Sitgreaves Mountain again, three days since I last hiked it to replace the geocache at the summit. I had originally made an on-the-fly replacement using a Nalgene bottle, but decided to haul up a nice .50 cal metal ammo can to serve as the replacement cache and get my water bottle back. Even thought I was carrying a large ammo can in my left hand the whole time up, I still made it to the summit in 80 minutes (including time spent on short breaks). Also put the summit log in the ammo can since there was room and I didn't see why I should leave it out since the cache and the summit log were both at the highest point near the survey marker. Also saw Reference Mark 1 which I missed on my first ascent, though I failed to find Reference Mark 2 and the NGS database seems to indicate that it went missing / destroyed sometime in the 1960s.

I've been wanting to hike up Sitgreaves for a while now. There's a geocache at the summit that I wanted to make my 5000th find. So since I was at 4999 caches found, it was time to hike up here.

Drove in on FR 705, which is off FR 74. This road goes up 800' in about a mile, not to mention it some sections were rutted. Made it within 1 mile to the summit as the crow flies. Though I made it with high clearance, 2wd, and careful wheel placement, the truck was struggling in section. 4x4 recommended for anyone else who decides to drive up that way.

I found a way up that didn't involve going up or down any false summits. Still with 1600' in 1 mile isn't easy. This first .5 or .6 miles is actually pretty easy compared to the final .5 or .6 miles to the top. Final stretch is 1000' gain in .5ish miles. So every 300ish horizontal feet equals 100 vertical feet. Since I mostly went straight up, this section was difficult, having to take short breaks every 100' vertical feet. Though after 90 minutes of hiking (including those short breaks) I made it to the summit.

Found the summit log and benchmark. I sadly did not find the geocache, but was given permission from the cache owner to replace it. After taking some photos I headed back down. Going down, while difficult was still much faster than the journey up. Enjoyable hike it all. Might hike back up in a week or two and bring an metal ammo can with me to replace the geocache with. As the current container is a Nalgene bottle as it was all I had on me. Though if FR 705 becomes impassable I might have to wait.

Been wanting to hike up here for a while and finally found the time to do it today. There are three geocaches that I wanted to find up there, one at the NW false summit, the other at the true summit, and the last on the NE false summit. Parked near FR 151E and started up the NE false summit. There's no marked trails leading up and barely any game trails. This combined with the large amount of deadfall everywhere made this a bit challenging. There was really no way to avoid it, so I just had to figure out the best path up that required the least amount of climbing and scrambling over. After 30ish minutes of struggle, I made it to the false summit. Found the first geocache after some searching and continued on. Went down into the saddle then back up to the summit, while of course having to navigate more deadfall and trees. Once at the top I found the second geocache then enjoyed a nice walk to the NE false summit. Along the way I saw a fence that crosses the hills, though it's not doing its job well as most of it had been crushed by fallen tree branches and debris. There was a gate for the fence at the top and what seemed to look like a really faint road, though that can't be right as there's no way for any vehicle to get up here. Eventually made it to the second false summit, which is actually quite high, in fact it's only 20' lower than the true summit. Found the last geocache up here and headed back down. While going down is usually easier than going up, the amount of deadfall and debris I had to navigate made it a pain in the rear. I did make it back down and only ended on my butt one time. Walked back to where I left the truck and headed home.

Video I took of the summit and false summits.

Decided to go on a short hike today to find three geocaches that were in the area. Park at the "closed road" gate along Little Springs Road / Fire Road 418B and headed off. First geocache on the list was at the junction of that road an a section of the Arizona Trail. The closed road was fine to walk on, at least until I passed the spring, after that the road was covered in fallen trees and debris. This road will probably be closed forever. After .8 miles it eventually became no more than a foot path. After finding the geocache near the AZ trail, I headed up to find the second one near Bismarck Lake. My maps showed a closed road heading up through the woods, which looked to be a faster route compared to walking along the AZ trail. This ended up not being a road at all, but a very faint two track that eventually disappeared forcing me to bushwhack up to the lake. Eventually made it to the AZ trail and soon Bismarck Lake, which wasn't more than a small puddle of muddy water. Descended down another trail that followed the wash area down to Little Springs. This was the easiest part of my hike as it was down hill and the trail was in good shape. Saw the pipe / spring in the fenced off area and while there was no water flowing out of the pipe, there was a pool of water below it that looked clear. Also saw the informational sign and historic plaque. Made my way back to my truck after successfully finding all three geocaches. Enjoyable hike in all.

Wanted to hike up here as there are five geocaches along the rim trail that I wanted to find. Parked at the base of Walker Lake Cinder Cone near the closed road sign. At one point you could've driven to the rim, but the forest service doesn't want people to do that anymore. Hiked up along the mountain and reached the rim trail. This trail is not marked on the maps, but follows the rim of Walter Lake Cinder Cone. Hiked along counter-clock wise finding geocaches as I went. At the northern edge of the rim is the highest point, 8910'. I found a summit log, though it looks new as there was only one other signature before mine on 9/10/25. Continued along the rim and made my way into the bowl. Walker Lake, though it seems to be more like a tank. There's some water in it and it seems to be popular with deer and such. Continued back down to my truck following the closed road. Easy and enjoyable hike in all.

Decided to hike up Government Hill as there were two geocaches on the mountain that I wanted to find. Both of these geocaches were 23 months lonely, which means the last time they were found was 23 months ago. Parked at the end of a dirt road, just off Spring Valley Road and started heading up. The first geocache was on top of one of the false summits at an elevation of 7960'. So I ended up taking the shortest route to it, which happened to be straight up the rock covered mountain slope. This was probably the steepest section of the entire hike. After finding and logging the cache, I continued up to the second one which was at a saddle to the north. Getting here wasn't too bad until I reached a section of the mountain covered in fallen trees and debris. This slowed my ascent as there was no clear path through the mess. It also started raining a bit, which was not predicted on the weather app, but thankfully it only lasted five minutes. Eventually I made it to the saddle, found and signed the geocache log.

At this point I headed up towards the summit to hopefully find the summit log. Near the top, I found the remains of what looks to be a small structure or storage area. Didn't see any evidence of people being up here other than that structure. Continued up and made it to the summit. Searched for awhile, but failed to find a summit log. Also, the previous triplog on this summit reports they found some survey disks. I also failed to find any disks and the NGS database does not report any benchmarks up here. The only interesting thing I found, was a rock with five vertical slashes in it.

Started heading down and found a much easier way to return to my truck. Just followed the ridgeline down. Along the way I found a tree someone named Matt had carved his name and date into. I also found an rusty can of what I presumed to be chainsaw fuel buried under a log. Enjoyable hike in all and a good workout too.

Decided to hike up Wing Mountain today as there were five geocaches located at the top and crater rim trail. Drove to a dispersed camping area near East Wing Tank and started up. First 0.2 follows a Jeep road, which then turns into a trail, only for it to end and become a bushwhack. Followed some game trails for a bit, until I realized it would be better to go mostly straight up compared to switchbacking. So from 8100’ to 8400’ I went up, then I found a trail, which I know now to be the rim trail that goes around the crater along the rim. Followed this trail up all the way to the survey disks. Found the main disk along with Reference Mark 1 and 2. I also found evidence of an old height of light. Continued along the rim trail around till I reached the high point and found a summit log and signed it. There also were some business cards in there, advertising someone’s hiking YouTube channel. A strange way to advertise a YouTube channel. Continued along the rim trail and eventually made my way down into the crater. Not much in the crater and didn’t see any evidence of a possible fire tower that was mentioned in someone else’s triplog. Hiked straight down, being careful not to slip. Slope was rather steep. Enjoyable hike.

Here’s a video I took of the survey disks, summit log, and views while hiking Wing Mountain if you’re curious what exactly is up here.

Was in Sedona to visit my family, they were driving up from Phoenix in an RV. Since I still had about 90 minutes till they arrived, I decided to go hiking. Doe Mtn was a close one and there were a few geocaches nearby so I went with it. The hike up was uneventful, I passed a few people going down and eventually made it to the top. Walked the rim trail and took a few photos. No one else was up here. Headed back down and made a short detour to find a geocache then headed back to my vehicle.

Was going down to Sedona today to camp with my family and since they weren't going to arrive till 6pm, I decided to go hiking. Goal of today was to find two geocaches, one located at the East end of the Thomas Point Trail and the other at the East end of the Harding Spring Trail. Parked at the Call of the Canyon parking area and was lucky as I got one of the last few spots. What was not fun was learning that my America the Beautiful pass was not accepted here and had to pay $15 for parking. Well, it was labor day weekend, so the area was much more crowded than usual, at least I know for future hikes that I shouldn't park there.

Walked North along the 89a till I found the trailhead. Had to search for it, as it isn't that well marked where the starting point is. Once I found it I started heading up. Lower section of the trail was nice as it was shaded with the ponderosa pines, upper section was not was exposed to the sun. I forgot to apply sunscreen before I started the hike. Oops. Continued up around the white rock mountains and was greeted to some scenic views of the area and 89a. Had to check the route once as there was some confusion on where the trail was supposed to lead, but otherwise no pathfinding issues. After some hiking and a few short breaks I made it to the top of the rim. Found a strange rock wall at the top, not sure what the purpose of it was, did not add or remove any rocks from it. Then I found the geocache, which was two years lonely (that means the last finder was over two years ago).

Started hiking towards the Harding Springs trail. Followed a few forest roads, but mostly bushwhacked. I was hoping to pick up the Cookstove Trail that ran along one of the forest roads, but failed to find it. The road that ran parallel to Cookstove can't really be called a road anymore. So many trees and debris were in the way. So instead I mostly stuck near the rim's edge. I did come across a trail that was maintained, (not cookstove though) and followed it all the way to the Harding Springs Trail. Saw a big elk along this trail, but wasn't able to take a photo before it ran off.

Found the geocache at the top of the Harding Springs trail and headed down. Going down was much easier than going up. A few log fences were along this trail, though half of them had fallen over. Made it down back to the 89a and walked back to my truck. The 89a walk was my least favorite part of the hike due to the loud vehicles and just how many there were. (Remember, this was labor day weekend) Though it was interesting to see what I can only assume to be part of an older alignment, below the current asphalt of the 89a. The old asphalt was red colored, just some sections of Old Route 66. I've heard that before the 89a was constructed, this stretch of road between Sedona and Flagstaff was called State Route 79. Though the current State Route 79 now belongs to a stretch of road Between Florence Junction and Oracle Junction.

Was an enjoyable hike. Though I was ready to get down into Sedona and get some lunch as I hadn't had much for breakfast that morning.
