I've seen this old cabin listed on the topographic maps and have been wanting to hike to it. There are also some geocaches along the way so since I had the weekend free I drove down to grab my kayak and spend a night on the water.
Day 1
After making the drive from my parent's house in Scottsdale (that's where my kayak is as there's no room to have it in Flagstaff in my tiny student apartment) I drove to the very end of the Bartlett Flat road. After unloading it and getting all of my gear (which I had stuffed into dry bags earlier), I was ready to go and headed out. Paddled about one mile before stopping at Jacks Cove to find a geocache. Found the cache and kept paddling to Sheep Creek where I planned to set up camp. As I got closer, the water got shallower, and there were times I had to get out and drag my boat over some rocks. I soon made it to the Sheep Creek area and set up camp on the west side of the Verde.

I then attempted to find one of the geocaches that were hidden at the top a large, jagged rock formation. I headed up the middle area and around the halfway point I started get swarmed by bees. I more or less stumbled my way down to get away, fighting through bushes and dry grasses along the way. I decided to not go for that cache just yet and attempted to head up river to Devil's Hole where I knew another one was. I originally tried to boat up but there was a lot of rocks and got tired of dragging the kayak. I then tried on foot and followed the banks, crossed the verde, and when I was .8 miles away (as the crow flies) that going on foot was a bad idea. I had reached a point where I couldn't cross the Verde, so I dejectedly headed back to camp.

At this point I decided to attempt the geocache that is at the top of the jagged rock formation instead. I managed to find a much better way up by following the spine. I made the short final scramble to ground zero and managed to find the geocache and get the FTF (First to Find). Stayed at the top for a few minutes and enjoyed the view. Headed back down to my campsite where I lit a fire and made dinner for the night.

Day 2
After packing up camp, I paddled to the mouth of Sheep Creek and abandoned my kayak on the bank. Hiked up and saw some bald eagles nesting on the mountain I had hiked yesterday and also found a dead eagle in Sheep Creek. RIP. The first mile up the creek was easy as it was dry and the biggest issue ended up being avoiding bees. However, I soon saw water and ended up hopscotching between rocks and fighting my way through dense brush. There also ended up being a lot of mosquitos here and was fighting them off the whole way through. As I neared the cabin and one of the geocaches, I realized it would just be easier to walk in the creek instead of avoiding spider webs, downed trees, and various debris. I soon made it to the geocache and successfully got another FTF on it. I then continued on in hopes of finding the cabin. Sadly, I was unable to find anything that resembled a cabin in the dense mess of trees and vines that inhabited the area. I even had the coordinates for the cabin I found in someone else's triplog. As I retreated and headed out I saw a large clump of wooden boards, trash cans, and corrugated metal wedged between some trees. I assume this is what is left of the cabin, though I'm not entirely certain as there was no evidence of the stone fireplace it had. At this point I headed back out, though as I was navigating the creek I slipped at got wet. While my handheld GPSr was fine, my iPhone in my pocket wasn't and it decided to stop working a few hours after getting wet.

Once I made it back to the kayak and headed back to Bartlett Reservoir. I stopped to find two more geocaches that were on the north bank of the lake successfully found them. I did almost tip over when trying to get back on my boat due to the large waves that were created by the speed boats and jet skis, but thankfully didn't. I paddled back to the shore and found a lot of people had set up camp here. Thankfully there was a space where I could back up my truck into so I could load it into the bed. Thought about finding some more geocaches nearby, but decided against it as I was pretty tired after all that hiking and kayaking. A very fun journey, except for the part where I was swarmed by bees and breaking my iPhone. I hope to hike there in the future, but come from the old road/horseshoe reservoir side, instead of the boating/sheep creek side.

Edit
Is there a way to attach a photoset and change the "my routes" attached routes? For some reason I there's a wrong gpx route linked.

Went hiking with friends. Had fun climbing in and around the slot canyons in the bowl of Red Mountain. What was not fun was slipping and sliding 50 feet down some cinders and ripping three big holes in my pants.

Hiked up Spitz Hill to place a geocache at the top. Was able to drive a bit higher along the power line easement road and cut about 150 vertical feet off the hike. Easy jaunt to the summit. Summit is rocky and covered in some large, lichen covered boulders. There's also some benchmark disks up here. Found the station mark, reference mark 1, and reference mark 2. Also found a summit jar. Fun, but short hike.

Hiked up here to place a geocache at the summit. Easy hike up to the summit. Found a station mark, reference mark #1, but did not find RM #2. I also didn't really search for RM 2 because even with two bars of 5g I couldn't get the datasheet open. Also found the possible remains of an old height of light. Easy hike back down.

Wanted to go for a hike today and decided to go hiking and find a geocache near Cherry Canyon. Parked the truck at the edge of Marshall Lake. I saw what appeared to be a closed road on OnX Backcountry that went across the mesa and decided to go that way instead of looping down the mountain along the forest road. Crossed a barbed wire fence and tried to find it. However, I never did locate it over the one mile of travel where this road was supposed to be. I wonder if OnX just hallucinated it or it was a road so old it has completely faded. I did find a game path that might've been it. I also found a downed barbed wire fence that went across the mesa. Soon I reached the edge and started heading down to Marshall Lake road. I passed it and continued through the brush to a forest road. I followed this road to the Marshall Trick Tank and to Cherry Canyon where the geocache was. I found the cache in good shape, with it last being found about 4.5 years ago. I headed back up to the trick tank and back to Marshall Lake road which I began hiking up and back to my truck. Along the way I passed a large steel tank and trough. Neither of which seemed to be in use as the tank was missing a ballcock and the tank had its pipes disconnected. I also climbed to the top of the tank and peered in and it way empty. I continued up the road and eventually made it back to my truck. Fun hike.

There's a geocache near the summit of Colton Crater that I've wanted to find for a while now. So after a 40 mile drive from Flagstaff, I found a place to park and started up. First obstacle in the way was a barbed wire fence, the both the top and bottom of the fence had barbs, but spied a spot where I could crawl under. Started heading up and soon made it to the rim. Followed it counter-clock-wise and soon reached a jeep road that continued along the rim. With the right vehicle you can drive up this road to the rim and get pretty close to the summit. My truck with only 2wd would not have been able to get up here. So I continued up the Jeep road on foot. For some reason my legs were extra tired today so I ended up needing more breaks than usual on the way up. I guess I need to stretch more. I eventually reached the end of the jeep road where it fizzled out near the top. Continuing on to the high point, I stopped to find the geocache and successfully signed the logbook. I walked to the summit / highpoint, crossing another fence along the way, and found a summit log. After taking another break at the very windy summit, I headed back down. Since the jeep road didn't exist on this side, there were a lot more annoying shrubbery and rocks to navigate. Soon I made it to the lowest point of the rim and hiked back over to where I parked my truck. I passed what remained of an old fence. All the barbed wire was gone, but the old wooden posts were still planted in the ground. Found a better way over the first fence I passed on the way back. Good hike in all, extremely windy at some points.

I wanted to do a hike today, I also wanted to find a geocache. Slate Mountain seemed like a good choice, not to mention I've been wanting to hike up it for awhile. Only downside was it takes 50 minutes to get to the trailhead and it was already the afternoon. I decided to go for it anyways. So I made the drive and eventually made it to the trailhead at 5:17pm. Not knowing if I'd be hiking down in the dark, I took both a headlamp and a jacket in my pack with me.

I started up along the remains of the forest road. Along the way I saw that the Forest Service put informational signs along the trail that explained many of the desert flora, though it seems a lot of the flora was gone. Higher up more burnt deadfall appeared on the slopes, however the trail was cleared of it showing recent mainentence. As I approached the summit, I stopped to climb up a nearby knob to find a geocache that was hidden there. I successfully found the geocache, it was last found almost three years ago, not many geocachers have hiked up here it seems. I continued along the trail and soon made it to the summit.

At the summit I found a benchmark and attempted to find the two reference marks. However the datasheet says they were copper nails and washers that were nailed to nearby trees. I looked at what was left of the burnt trees but I did not find the reference marks. I also found some bits of concrete which I presume were forgotten when the lookout tower was taken down.

The way down was uneventful, though it started getting a bit colder. By the time I had reached the bottom, the sun had set, but there was some residual light still in the sky. Good hike in all.

Me and my Dad stayed two nights at the Lees Ferry campground. We hiked this trail once we had set up the motorhome at one of the sites. We checked out the old cabins and some of the mine remnants that were left behind near the start of the trail. The informational signs were really useful as they had interesting information about the area. On the way to the camp site I stopped to find a benchmark and found the station mark along with the two reference disks. At the camp site there were some cool ruins, a old house, two fire places, some thick braided cable, and some old tins. There is also a benchmark disk here, but the datasheet referenced some of the original structures, such as a log cabin, which didn't exist anymore. Not to mention the it seemed to be buried in a thick bustle of shrubs, and I didn't want to fight my way in them just to find a disk.

We continued on down the trail that fishmen and other hikers have made over the years. I also stopped to find another benchmark, but at this point I had lost cell service and couldn't download the datasheet. Searched a bit above the trail before calling it quits. A bit farther up is where we decided to turn around. Thought about hiking the spencer trail once I dropped Dad off at the camper, but just didn't get to it. Fun hike.

Driving back up to Flagstaff after spending the weekend with family. Decided to explore the Aqua Fria National Monument and find some geocaches. Found a route in that my 2wd pickup could navigate, though it was rocky, it was passable. Decided to air down my tires to make the ride smoother. Explored a side trail finding geocache along the way. Found some weird pipe covers that seemed to connect a nearby tank to what looked to be an old pump station in the canyon. However, the nearby tanks, were empty so I'm not sure where that water is going to, if there's even a pumphouse down in the canyon. There's also the strange sight of a power pole just ending, no more wires, though I think the wires moved underground as I saw electrical boxes every mile or so.

I ended up driving along the El Paso Gas Pipeline Easement road, which is very bumpy. Found some rock walls near the eighty-eight mine. Also found some Indian Grindstones in a large boulder. I did not visit the nearby mine, but I plan to visit it another day. It was getting late and I wanted to get back up to Flagstaff. When I got back to Sunset Point exit, I found out my air compressor bit the dust, so I had to manually air up my tires with a bike pump, which wasn't fun. Guess I got to get a new one, to Harbor Freight I go.

There was a geocache near these old ruins so I of course had to find it and visit the ruins. My Dad joined me on this adventure. We drove to the access gate, (which I almost overshot, it sneaks up on you quick) which is only accessible from westbound US 60. The gate ended up being locked, so we hiked in, and considering the awful condition of the road, I don't think I would've made it far in my 2wd truck. Nonetheless, there are tire tracks on the old road, showing people have gotten access somehow. The walk in was easy and we mainly followed the old road in as it curved around and crossed the wash. Our first sign of the ruins was an old cattle guard. Then there was the old well, which I didn't realize was a well till I was staring right into the void. Part of the cover was gone and I'm extremely glad what was left of it didn't collapse under my weight. We then made it to the main homestead structure and found the geocache. We wandered over to another old ruin, finding another well in the process, this one was fully covered, but you could see down into the well as there was a vent on the side. This one had a ladder so you could get out, the other well didn't have a ladder though. We also found an old telegraph/telephone insulator, a lot of rusty metal, and some old claim markers. I checked the topo maps once I got home and saw that the road in from the US 60 at one point joined Hewitt Station road, though it doesn't now, as there's private property in the way.

Afternoon classes were cancelled and instead of doing homework I decided to drive all the way down to Sedona to hike Mescal mountain. Besides watching a dump truck take a corner too fast and nearly tip over, the drive down was uneventful. Parked at the Long Canyon trailhead and with it being a weekday there were lots of spots available. Easy going along the Long Canyon and the side trail to the Birthing Cave, which I ended up skipping as there were too many people around it, even on the weekday. Followed the trail up to the saddle, passing some Indian ruins on the way up. The hard part ended up being how I was going to climb up these cliffs. I tried a few spots before googling a waypoint for a good spot. Once at the recommended spot, I made the climb up. It's not a bad climb, there's a lot of handholds. The top is flat and I wandered around the ridge. I eventually headed back down, which was a bit difficult as you had to find the handholds with your feet instead of your eyes. Hiked along the north spine of the mountain before eventually descending back to the Long Canyon trail. Enjoyable hike in all.

Wandered around the stone dam to find a geocache. Crossed over the stone part of the dam to get to the other side of Johnson Creek. Then hiked along the Stone to Steel trail to visit the old steel dam. The stone dam had some water held up while the steel dam had no water stored. Both were interesting dams. I found a valve on the west side of the steel dam that I presume is to release the water stored behind the dam downstream. Enjoyed the hike in all and found two geocaches. Would recommended.

Went for a bike ride to the Johnson Canyon Railroad Tunnel. Enjoyed seeing the ruins of all the old railroad infrastructure. I also learned that my bike riding muscles are a bit out of shape as I was struggling a bit on the way to the tunnel. Having the fight up the incline didn't help either. Enjoyed the journey, but didn't go all the way to the ruined bridge pass the tunnel as I didn't bring enough water, oopsie. I'll do this route again to visit it. Also found like three geocaches along the way, so that was fun.

Hiked up here to place a geocache at the summit. Hiked along the logging road to the highest point then headed up the hill. Found three bearing trees and a corner monument a few hundred feet up from the road. Stopped here to rest for a few minutes (I was carrying a .50 cal metal ammo can as the cache container), before continuing up. Soon made it to the top and found the Fortynine station mark, but didn't find reference marks 1 or 2. Also found the summit log, which was a glass jar, there were a lot of signatures on it. Placed the geocache under the same rock pile the summit log was hiding under. The hike down was a lot faster.

Hiked up here to place a geocache at the summit. Drove in via Forest Road 58 and parked near Little Spring. Headed up, following the various game trails and continued up in a switchback type of way before eventually reaching the summit. Found the summit log which happened to be a metal ammo can. Placed my geocache (plastic ammo can) under the same rocks the summit log was hiding. Found all of the GRAY benchmarks, one station mark and two reference marks. Also found what seemed to be the ruins of a height of light. Headed down and stopped by Little Spring to check it out, though I didn't see any water in the spring box. Also found a swing set and about 50 Copenhagen lids nailed to a nearby tree.

Went on a short hike with Tikaani (one of the shelter dogs from High Country Humane) via the hike with a dog program. Started at the Elden Pueblo parking lot and hiked over to a geocache, which we successfully located. Then we headed to a hill which had another geocache nearby. We passed a below ground water tank and headed up. We found what seemed to be a native american ruin. We also looked for the geocache here but failed to find it. Headed down and followed AZT #32 to Sandy Seep. Stopped along the way to look for another geocache, but also failed to find this one. Headed down and returned to car. Fun hike with Tikaani.

Me and some friends decided to do some exploring near Richinbar mine. The access gate along I-17 is no longer locked so we drove in. We wandered around the mine, looking into the pits and seeing if we could find any adits or portals that the were not sealed. We didn't find any openings, but we did find a lot of possible sealed portals. We found old roads, old bricks, and more. I also found the final stage to a multi-geocache by chance, which was a pleasant surprise. We wandered down to the old windmill in the wash and saw it was located above a 30' deep well. There was also a geocache hidden here which I failed to find. Last finder was back in 2018, so I presume the geocache might've gone missing :(. We spent about 4 hours exploring the area.

Hiked up here to find a geocache on the false summit. Parked at the end of the jeep road at the base of the hill and followed the social trail up to the top. Found the geocache in good shape on the false summit then headed up to the true summit. Found what looks to be some indian ruins along with a benchmark. Did not find the witness post, reference mark 1, or reference mark 2.

Decided to do this trail as I wanted to find two Earthcaches along the way (these are a type of geocache that do not include a physical container or logbook but instead has the geocacher answer questions about a geological matter relating to the earth to log a find) There were a lot of people out on the trail, which surprised me, though that’s because this hike is in the city and not one of the usual middle of nowhere hikes I usually do. I enjoyed the hike and seeing the landslide area along with the mushroom columns that were ever present along the trail.

I had also planned to do loop around and exit the park to find a traditional geocache in the Tonto Forest, but was unable as it would be night before I returned. While I’m fine hiking at night the park closes at sunset (which I didn’t learn till arrival) and had no intention of staying the night here or worse, getting a ticket.
