Was going down to Sedona today to camp with my family and since they weren't going to arrive till 6pm, I decided to go hiking. Goal of today was to find two geocaches, one located at the East end of the Thomas Point Trail and the other at the East end of the Harding Spring Trail. Parked at the Call of the Canyon parking area and was lucky as I got one of the last few spots. What was not fun was learning that my America the Beautiful pass was not accepted here and had to pay $15 for parking. Well, it was labor day weekend, so the area was much more crowded than usual, at least I know for future hikes that I shouldn't park there.

Walked North along the 89a till I found the trailhead. Had to search for it, as it isn't that well marked where the starting point is. Once I found it I started heading up. Lower section of the trail was nice as it was shaded with the ponderosa pines, upper section was not was exposed to the sun. I forgot to apply sunscreen before I started the hike. Oops. Continued up around the white rock mountains and was greeted to some scenic views of the area and 89a. Had to check the route once as there was some confusion on where the trail was supposed to lead, but otherwise no pathfinding issues. After some hiking and a few short breaks I made it to the top of the rim. Found a strange rock wall at the top, not sure what the purpose of it was, did not add or remove any rocks from it. Then I found the geocache, which was two years lonely (that means the last finder was over two years ago).

Started hiking towards the Harding Springs trail. Followed a few forest roads, but mostly bushwhacked. I was hoping to pick up the Cookstove Trail that ran along one of the forest roads, but failed to find it. The road that ran parallel to Cookstove can't really be called a road anymore. So many trees and debris were in the way. So instead I mostly stuck near the rim's edge. I did come across a trail that was maintained, (not cookstove though) and followed it all the way to the Harding Springs Trail. Saw a big elk along this trail, but wasn't able to take a photo before it ran off.

Found the geocache at the top of the Harding Springs trail and headed down. Going down was much easier than going up. A few log fences were along this trail, though half of them had fallen over. Made it down back to the 89a and walked back to my truck. The 89a walk was my least favorite part of the hike due to the loud vehicles and just how many there were. (Remember, this was labor day weekend) Though it was interesting to see what I can only assume to be part of an older alignment, below the current asphalt of the 89a. The old asphalt was red colored, just some sections of Old Route 66. I've heard that before the 89a was constructed, this stretch of road between Sedona and Flagstaff was called State Route 79. Though the current State Route 79 now belongs to a stretch of road Between Florence Junction and Oracle Junction.

Was an enjoyable hike. Though I was ready to get down into Sedona and get some lunch as I hadn't had much for breakfast that morning.

Down in Sedona doing vehicle traffic monitoring at Outlaw Trail for the Red Rock Forest District, which means sitting in my truck for eight hours and logging what types of vehicles are entering or exiting Outlaw Trail. Decided to hike up Windmill Mountain during my lunch break as there were two geocaches, one at the summit and one 3/4ths of the way up that I wanted to find. Parked off the shoulder and headed along the power lines before starting to climb up to the first geocache which was on a rock outcrop. Made it to the outcrop and quickly located the geocache and signed the logbook. Then headed to the summit, which was much easier as most of the elevation gain was behind me. Had to cross a barbed wire fence, but after that I was at the summit. Found the summit geocache in good shape then started to head back down. Crossed the barbed wire fence at the saddle then hiked down rather fast as I was running out of lunch break time. Mostly followed the wash on the way down and soon made it to the bottom near FR 525. At this point I was running out of time and ran back to where I left my truck to get back to Outlaw Trail. I did make it back down to my truck before my lunch ended, but the road was rough and a bit slow going so I ended up being five minutes late to the Outlaw Trail. Oh well, made a note in the vehicle observation sheet and continued my logging. It’s also super slow today and I still have three hours and 15 minutes left till my shift is over.

There's really nothing special about Wildcat Hill. It's just another cinder cone which are already ubiquitous in northern Arizona. However, there happened to be a geocache at the summit which I wanted to find. A lonely one too, with the last log being in 2020. Found a road in, that looped around to the west side. This was the ideal approach as the slope was more forgiving. Drove to the base, which was as far as I could drive in my 2wd Tacoma pickup and started up. The road continues up till you reach the southern tip, so if you have vehicle with 4wd and a short wheel base, you can drive up another 200' elevation wise. It looks like the road might've continued to the summit, but rocks and fallen trees block whatever might've been left. Continuing up to the summit wasn't hard at all and took less than 15 minutes from vehicle to the top. Now to find the geocache. Sadly, even though I turn over plenty of rocks and expanded my search radius, I was unable to find it. This geocache was an ammo can and those tend to get stolen, so I presume that's what happened to this one. Or it could've been a plastic one and melted, as there's evidence of a fire at the summit. I did however, find the summit log, which I signed with my real name and geocache name. Disappointing that I failed to find the cache as that was the big reason for hiking this peak. Hiked back down the way I came in and found some other caches nearby. Of course I'll have to hike this hill again when the geocache gets replaced, but it's not a hard hill to hike, so it will be fine. Only issue is the peak is 40 miles from where I live.

Decided to hike up Klostermeyer Hill today as there is a geocache at the top that I wanted to find. Parked off Forest Road 81 and the road leading to Klostermeyer Tank Spring. Headed through the grasses to the base of the Hill and started up. There's a lot of random game / cattle trails heading in random directions around the mountain. More or less followed them up in a switchback type of way instead of just going straight up. Soon I reached the top where I was greeted to some views of Parks, AZ, and Government Hill. There was also a lot of strange, twisted lava rocks at the summit and mountain slopes. Found the geocache at the top, it was last found in 2020, so over five years ago. Then I headed back down, this time mostly following the fence line till I reached the road and my vehicle.

There's a geocache at the top and decided to try and find it. Originally tried to drive to the top, but that was a bad plan as I lost traction and started sliding back down before I even reached the first curve. Had to carefully back up down the road till I could turn around. Hiked up instead, road is gravely and there were a few times I lost my footing. I went the easier route and hiked up the road and not straight up. At the top there is a giant reflector which I do not know the purpose of. Found the geocache and hiked back down.

I was out here for work and drove the waterline trail over two days. The first section being driven on the 17th and the second half from inner basin to the wilderness boundary on the 18th. I should note that you are not supposed to drive along this road, I had explicit permission along with the gate codes to access it. The first section is under construction with rock walls and overflow areas being constructed so the road doesn't get washed out during the next big rain storm. The road is just big enough for one vehicle to pass, so when we saw dump trucks heading in the other way, we had to wait near a pull out and let them pass, or if we didn't see a pullout, we would carefully backup till we reached one. Also those dump truck drivers seem to drive way to fast, we nearly crashed into one going the opposite direction around a blind corner.

The next day involved driving the section from Lockett Meadow to the Aubineau trail junction. You still can't drive to the Lockett Meadow campsite, as the access gate to the road around Sugarloaf Peak is still locked. The road is narrow, with no places to turn around until you reach the end. The trip was mostly spent moving rocks off the road and chopping down a tree in the road with hand tools. Compared to the first section, this section is densely vegetated and shaded. Plenty of deer were seen while driving this section. At the end of the road, it hooks up with the Aubineau trail. There's also an old road that goes further up, but the forest service is working on making it disappear and become forest again. Also according to ONX Backcountry, there's a trail that goes to the top of Humphrey's
Peak from here, though it is also closed and should not be hiked.

Hiked my first ever AZT section. Started north and hiked south. Little Elden Tank / Spring is dry and one of the walls have collapsed. Apparently this hike was only supposed to be 14 miles, but it ended up being 16 miles. Not exactly sure where those two extra miles came from. Also found three geocaches along the trail. Ubered back to Whetherford TH when I was done.

Decided to hike Smith Butte after classes at NAU. Wanted to find the RIT (PID - FQ0643) survey disks at the top as they had not been logged since they were placed back in 1959. Park at the Newman Park Rd gate as the road was closed due to the snow. Followed the road for a bit before hiking up towards the summit. I've never hiked in snow before as I lived in the valley my whole life and realized for every step I took I would sink a bit. This slowed down my climbing a bit and made my feet cold, but it wasn't too bad. Once at the summit I found Reference Mark 1 and 2, but was unable to find the station mark. I'm sure it's there, but the ground is covered in snow. There's a summit log in the classic mason jar under some rocks nearby. Headed back down to the road without slipping in the snow. Enjoyed the hike, will probably hike it again when there's no snow on the ground to see if I can located the station mark.

Went to Death Valley with family over spring break. Mosaic Canyon was a fun hike to do that features a bit of rock scrambling and steady upwards gain. Made it to the end without any issues thanks to the helpful arrows pointing which way to go. Made it back to our car just as it started to rain, as hiking in the rain in a slot canyon isn't that wise.

Nice hike up, there's a tree blocking the trail near the top switchbacks that you have to crawl over. The fire lookout tower was unoccupied at the top. Searched for a few benchmarks and found RED (1903) along with RED BUTTE and RED BUTTE RM2, did not locate RED BUTTE RM1. Saw one person while hiking down.

Staying in Bisbee for two nights and decided to hike up this mountain. Hike is a steady uphill climb, mostly following a barbed wire fence. Climb wasn't too bad and I enjoyed the hike. Great views of Naco, Sierra Vista, the wall, and Bisbee Junction from the summit. Lots of cholla near the top, had to be careful not to poke myself on one of them. I also looked for a survey marker on the summit, however it seemed to be right in the middle of some chollas and I had no interest in digging through them. Hike down went much faster than the hike up. Saw one other person on the trail.
Video I took along the way - [ youtube video ]

This trail also happens to be on the hiking app AllTrails and says you can hike up Fissure Peak. Obviously you shouldn't do that as like it says in the guide. It's private property. Lots of people complaining in the AllTrails hike reviews that hiking up Fissure Peak is hard, probably because there's no maintained trail.

Drove out here to find a geocache and check out the gauging station. Drove along Forest Road 647 till about .4 miles from the rim. I could've driven closer, but it was going to be faster walking compared to slowly bumping along at 2 mph in a 2wd, high clearance truck. If you plan to drive to the campground further down, I recommend a 4x4, I would not take my truck down there as without 4wd, I don't think I could drive back up. Also a short wheelbase would be preferred.

Followed the maintenance trail down. It is not a maintained trail and you will have to push back bushes. Long pants are recommended. The trail exits right at the gauging station. If you continue heading WSW, you would have to go down a 30' drop. The stream was dry, so you could possibly climb back up after you climbed down, but it would be difficult. I did not continue on, as my goal was to find a nearby geocache, which I succeeded in finding.

The gauging station does not look to be in use. I was unable to find it on the USGS website. The equipment is locked inside, secured with a padlock. I found two benchmark disks, one on each side of the stream bed monumented in line with the other.

Arrived at the beginning of the road around 7:30. There's a geocache loop called the Pinal Loop that takes you around these mountains. With lots of geocaches to find and many miles to cover, I was hoping for a lot of finds. This was not the case, as I ended up with more DNF's than I did smiley faces.

The road down to Simpson Lake was pretty smooth, didn't need 4wd. Passes a lot of useless cattle guards. Turning down Simpson Lake road was when the area became pretty rough. Once you enter the river/wash, there was not much of a road. We needed 4wd from this point on. The road was mostly in the creek, with many boulders and mine garbage to navigate around. Along the way, we found an old adit in the side of the mountain. After looking at some topo maps after the trip I saw there were some others nearby, along with an old ranch somewhere north of the mine.
[ youtube video ]

About a mile past the mine, we reached a fork in the road. This fork didn't go anywhere, and the roads reconnected after 500 feet. The left fork went up to a narrow and eroded section of road, while the right path entered the creek. We originally thought the bottom path went nowhere, so we went on the top path. This was a mistake. We drove the jeep on the top path, I was hesitant and thought we wouldn't fit, my dad however, thought it was fine. I drove up and the path became very narrow, dad watched out the passenger side to make sure I didn't fall off. All was good till we hit a very narrow section. Dad hopped out of the Jeep (and nearly fell off the cliff) and carefully directed me past this spot. It was slow going, but we made it past. I do not recommend taking the high section in a normal car, leave it for the utvs and dirtbikes. This was by far the most stressful portion of the trip.

We finally made it out of the creek and joined FR 2 heading south. We saw lots of great views of the surrounding area. We soon made it to a junction and continued on FR 2. Few switch backs here, but nothing I couldn't handle. Once we joined FR 349A/635 it was a bit slower going, as we had to constantly check our maps to make sure we were going the right way. There's a lot of old mining and ranch roads out here. We passed two tanks, which has water in them. We also saw a lot of cows here. We had to open and close one gate along the way.

Around mile 12, my Dad's maps showed FR 2545, which looked like it could take us to the Sulphide del Rey campground. Turns out this road does not exist, so we were forced to continue on to FR899. After navigating more switchbacks and one technical spot, we eventually made it to the more maintained FR899. At this point it was an easy 5ish miles east to the campground.

At mile 18, we reached a junction with four other nearby roads. We thought there was a shortcut to Miami via FR 580. This was not the case as there was a locked gate near the radio tower. On a side note, we found a exhumed casket on the ground. It was sealed but was leaking a weird fluid and smelled like death. We found a hole in the ground a bit higher up. Not sure why the casket wasn't there, but we assumed the rain unburied it, then someone found it thinking it was treasure.

We turned back and headed down FR651 for an easy descent to Kellner Canyon Road. We then turned left, assuming it would take us back to Globe. Turns out the road was barricaded a mile down the road, not sure why the don't have any signs of the closer near the junction. Went the other way and eventually made it back to Globe and the US 60 to head home.

Went on a hike with some friends to hopefully find two geocaches and get FTFs. First 1.25 miles was along Forest Road 1063. This was easy going with only a little bit of elevation gain. The next 1.25 miles was in the wash and canyon. This was a bit difficult with us having to avoid wasps, bees, and even a rattlesnake. We finally made it to the first geocache and was able to find it. There was another cache .75 miles farther, but despite warning them multiple times to bring water, they did not have enough and we were forced to turn back. I actually had to share some of my water with one of them who decided to bring none. Also one of my friends was spooked because she was the one who almost stepped on the rattler. Lots of mining claims in the canyon, but didn't see any evidence of diggings or tools.

Fun hike, wish we went farther though.

Drove down to the Horseshoe Dam area to do some hiking and find some geocaches. Original plan was biking one of the forest roads, but that did not work out, so I drove down to the boat launch. Followed the shoreline the headed up the mountain to some native american ruins. Should've worn pants as my legs were badly scratched by the time I made it to the ruins. Followed the mountains spine back down to the maintenance shed then followed an old jeep trail around it to the road.

Ruins - [ youtube video ]

Hopped back into my truck and drove to the Bureau of Reclamation buildings and hiked up to the ridge line. Passed the old landing strip and eventually made my way to the old water tower. Circa 1964. Headed back down to the truck then hiked under the dam and wandered around on the other side for a bit.

Water tower - [ youtube video ]

SRP was finishing up their work on the dam and came over the check on me. They offered my a body armor drink and said "stay hydrated, there's no cell service out here." I was finishing up at this time anyways, but still accepted the drink. It was the peach mango flavor, it tasted pretty good.

Had fun, found six geocaches, and found some cool structures too.

Have wanted to hike up here for a while and find the geocache located near the summit. First 3/4 of a mile is along the Tortilla Flat Campground road, which was closed for the season. I was just passing through so I went that way and no one stopped me. After I reached the trail, I had to cross a wash and ended up getting so many of those annoying yellow grass bits in my socks. I finally started gaining elevation after I passed 9/10th of a mile. Hike up was nice, however, there is a short steep section to the top of the tortilla stack. After you reach the top, you are greeted to some nice views.

I headed farther down to the other side of the stack to find the geocache. Geocache was found in good shape. Took nothing and left nothing except my name on the log.

On the way back down, I saw Apple weather changed from cloudy to 100% rain. Not knowing when rain would come, I headed down pretty quickly. Only stopped to take pictures of a hawk that flew by.

I wanted to follow the creek on the way back, but decided against it if it decided to rain. It didn't rain, but better safe than sorry.

I've been wanting to hike up Monument Mountain for a long time, mostly to find the geocache GC13Y00 (Cook Mesa Cache) which had not been logged in over ten years. Took me about 80 minutes to get to the base of the mountain, followed FR 24, then turned left on FR 41. Followed FR 41 for about 1.5 miles till I reached a pull off at N 34° 00.513 W 111° 53.744.

Was originally going to follow Flying Fliver's GPX track, but he started a bit further down FR 41 then I had gone, so I didn't do that. The first 0.1 miles up where not that bad, but it got steep pretty quick, so I had to slow down and be much more careful, as there were a lot of loose rocks and soil. I believe the elevation gain from my truck to the summit was around 800 feet. I made it to the top in 37 minutes, that includes the time spend on breaks.

I found the survey marker in great shape. The marker was monumented in 1924 and is at an elevation of 5002 feet. I also found the geocache, most recent log was back in 2016, so this cache has not gotten many finds. Took nothing and left nothing in the geocache, except my name on the logbook of course.

I also planned to head to the Yavapai/Maricopa county line to find the concrete frustum. N 34° 01.128' W 111° 53.715' I planned to place a geocache near the frustum. Headed down the mountain to a saddle where I had to fight my way through man thorny plants, good thing I wore pants. It smoothed out once I reached the saddle and I continued this way for about 0.3 miles to the frustum. The frustum is in good shape, with one side saying Maricopa 1924, the other saying Yavapai 1924, and the last side showing distances to the other frustums along the county line. Also saw the nearby Magazine Tank, which looked to be about halfway full of water.

After finding the frustum and placing a geocache, I headed back to Monument Mountain and headed back down to my truck. Had a lot of fun with this hike and enjoyed the great views from the summit.

Decided to hike up to Fremont Saddle today and find the two virtual geocaches along the way. This was my first time hiking in this area. The hike up was uneventful, I ended up passing lots of people and their dogs. I also passed a group of college students that were heading down. I made it to Fremont Saddle in 1 hour and 7 minutes.

Entire hike ended up taking 2 hours and 3 minutes.

On a side note, those college students I passed ended up needing help, as one of their group became very sick so they had to cancel their backpacking trip. I ended up driving two of their group back to First Water trailhead back to their vans so they could get help to the student that was sick. Interesting day.

About a month late writing this triplog, ended up busy with work, school, and other things and kinda forget about it. Parked at the pull off at N 33° 18.025 W 111° 04.005 and headed up. I believe it was around 3pm when I started heading up. My plan was to find geocache GCJN6D since it had not been found since 2019. I followed a trail up instead of following the road specified in the overview as it looked like it was on Resolution Copper property and didn't want to get in trouble.

The trail was mostly easy to follow, as it was somewhat defined and had cairns along some spots. It had just rained and there were puddles of water and a stream. Saw some rock climbers while hiking to the geocache. I believe from the parking waypoint it was about a .75 mile hike to the cache. No clue what the AEG was as I deleted the gpx track. Made it to ground zero at 3:30ish where I found the cache hiding under a rock.

Would've liked to go up farther, however my parents like me home before sunset and I had a hour drive back to Scottsdale. So after admiring the area for a bit, I turned around and headed back down to my truck. I made it back to my truck around 3:55pm and headed home. A interesting area, saw some survey markers, lots of cool rocks, and a mine shaft vent. I'll have to explore more the next time I'm camping at Oak Flat.

Wanted to hike to the top of Saint Clair Peak to see the Native American ruins and find a geocache (GC9NW6B). Parked near a gate to an off-road trail and headed off. The start of the trail makes you crawl over a locked gate, as the first ~1.2 miles used to be an old jeep trail. At ~0.2 miles in I passed a water well. Once I made it to ~1.4 miles in I reached a fork in the road, where the jeep trail continued right, I went left on a very overgrown jeep/foot trail.

Once I reached ~1.8 miles in, the overgrown jeep/foot trail ended. This is where the trail became hard, as I had to climb ~400 ft up the mountain to the ruins. There is also no trail, so you are bushwacking the entire way up. This part took me the longest, looks of catclaw, and it became a challenge to avoid them. I should have worn pants instead of shorts, my legs were scratched to hell once I was done.

Eventually made it to the ruins and continued up to the summit where the geocache was located. Made it to the summit and found the geocache (.30 cal ammo container), which also contains the original summit log. I did not stay long at the summit as there are gnats everywhere. Took a break at the ruins before I started the hike down. I started later than I wanted and off the trail at 10:30, ended up drinking 3.5 liters of water on the hike.
