The heat and humidity was kind of overbearing for the kids, so we didn't do too much. There was also a lot of mud throughout from the recent rain, which made it a little dicey for the kids to negotiate. The odometer on the GPS said we only did about a quarter mile, but after I saved the track and put it in my TopoUSA, it said we did more like 0.9 miles, which seems more correct. I still hiked without a backpack, but the shoulder is getting better and I think I might be able to handle a short hike with a lighter pack. Looking forward to going back on my own for a longer hike later this week before we return to AZ.
Deer Lakes Park is part of the Allegheny County parks system and it about 20 mile NE of Pittsburgh. This park has a whole slew of trails that can loop around back to anywhere you've parked, just about. Below is a link from their website for a .pdf file of a map of the trails.
