Everyone locally in AZ knows the story about Harold Fish and the unfortunate incident that happened on this trail. So it seemed almost fitting that as we were getting ready to start, a couple showed up with two dogs, one of which was a beagle that WOULD NOT STOP BARKING!!!!! Actually, it was more of a blood curdling howl. Fortunately, even as slow as I hike, I was able to put enough distance between me and them after 15 minutes or so. Then, about 10-15 minutes after the Baskervilles were out of earshot, we could hear a gunshot. Hmmm... :gun: 8-[

Joe got off to his off trail stint a little early and took Liz and Tim with him. They all got back on at some point, but I hear the "official" word is that they never were off trail to begin with. Ok. :oplz:

The section where you start to go back downhill after a few miles was a little disconcerting, knowing that we immediately had to make up that elevation before we got up to the Rim and then it would be a nice uphill slog on the way back on mile 13. Right after that, there is a lot of shade and cover from the pines and a nice stream that the trail parallels.

Joe, Liz, Dave and Tim took Joe's alternate off trail route up to the Rim while Wally, Kyle, Rachel, Ron, Jim and I stayed on trail and gutted it out through the switchbacks. It was a challenge, but not unbearable. After lunch we headed down and Joe and Co. caught up to us. I managed to stay in the #3 slot behind Joe and Wally until the uphill part on the way back down, when I fell down to #7.

On the ride back home, Tim and I stopped at Circle K for some quick sustenance, during which I saw Wally pass us by as we were about to pull out. It's ON! I passed him just before Mt. Ord on the way back. Once I got home, I was about a good 20 min. before he pulled in with Dave, Kyle and Rachel. I drive fast, but not by that much. Turns out Wally got a ticket at the Blue Pt. Rec. Area on the Bush Hwy. where the speed limit dips down to 35 mph. So I drive like a maniac and Wally gets a ticket. Go figure. :A1:

And a good time was had by all. :thanx:
