As I ascended along the ridges and gained elevation, it got less humid and also cooler from the breezes. Saw a sleeping diamondback along the Cottonwood Trail on my way up to the junction with the Skull Mesa Trail. At Cottonwood Spring there was a constant buzz of bees that were omnipreset throughout the trees and bushes there. At the very beginning of the unofficial 247A trail there is a baby javelina carcass lying on the trail. For this trail being unofficial, there certainly was a lot of work put into constructing it. At one point there was a metal sign saying that the horse/hiking trail is north of the fence, so it seems to be more undocumented than unofficial. It certainly is a real trail and very easy to follow. I found two junctions for other trails that I followed for a little bit, creating spurs on the GPS route that I've uploaded, in case anyone else wants to try to go find these and see where they go. I'm planning on doing that myself within the next year. Towards the southern end of this segment you can see the Spur Cross Trail below.
The mileage and AEG are taken from my info after I put the track in TopoUSA, the time is moving time according to my GPS. |
