It was pretty chilly at the start, but once we got out of the lower area, it warmed up. Canyon del Oro was running, so we had to make arrangements to try to keep our feet dry. John and I made use of Costco garbage bags. I used double bags, so my feet ended up drier (until later). Groth opted to just put on the waterproof slippers and change shoes.
The hike up to the pools was mostly in the shade, keeping us cool. Once we got to the pools it became apparent how much water was flowing, which was a lot. All the stream crossing were kind of tricky due to the high water level. There were also waterfalls visible in the distance from all the snowmelt. The desert was also very green, with a carpet of grass covering the ground below the pools.
After the pools, the trail makes a couple descents, which results in several more stream crossings. I was uncomfortable with the crossings at first, due to my boots wearing thin on the tread. By the time we made our last crossing, though, I was getting into it.
The last half mile up to Romero Pass was a slog, not only due to the steepness, but also because there was some patchy snow that became less patchy and more snow as we got to the top. There was just enough snow in some steep and narrow spots to almost make it treacherous.
On the way down, the stream crossings seemed much easier. I think the water level may have come down some by then, but I had also become more comfortable and was more familiar with the areas and knew where to cross this time.
Below the pools on the way down, we hit the weekend crowds, which slowed us down a bit. Our time going down was much better than going up, only 3 hours vs. almost 4.5 on the way up. My lunch at the top and some ibuprofen for my ankle seemed to do wonders for my energy levels (not to mention the downhill part) Just below the pools there was a lady who appeared to have broken her foot who being attended to by her party. At the bottom we saw SAR on their way up to get her. |
