Saturday night I camped near Elephant Arch- crashed in the bed my truck at the trailhead. Woke up pre-sunrise Sunday morning to catch some photos of the arch, then was on my way towards Globe by about 7:45AM. My truck was absolutely fine the entire way to the creek. The drive down the hill was a bit rocky, but not nearly enough to present any problems. For anyone with a sedan (at least at the time of this triplog)- Parking at the top of the hill would eliminate any clearance issues and would tack on a half mile of cardio at the end of the hike. Not a bad deal.
I started hiking sometime mid-morning. The creek was chilly at first but I got used to it pretty quickly. I had a big pack on because of photo gear, which made busting through overgrown trees kind of frustrating. The nearer I got to the box the more exciting the scenery became. Boulders, fall colors, 3-4 foot waterfalls. Cool stuff! I made it to the box section and put my stuff down on the first sandy/rocky beach, which had pieces of cactus strewn about all over it. Little landmines just waiting to be stepped on. I spent all afternoon wandering the box section looking for photos and just enjoying the area. I started hiking out around 5:00 and finished in the dark at almost 6PM.
Great hike! This creek is WELL worth a visit. |
