Hiked up to the Devil's Chasm ruins with my son-in-law, Lloyd. Encountered a group of three other hikers at the trail head who we would see again at the ruins and on the trail. The creek was running low so there were no wet rocks to climb at the waterfalls. The first waterfall looked like an imposing obstacle but there was a knotted rope on the right side which really helped climbing up the smooth slippery rock - not sure I would have been able to make it past this point without the rope. If there had been no rope my plan was to send Lloyd up to the top and let him pull me up with the rope I brought - best son-in-law a guy could have! There was no rope at the second waterfall. It was fairly easy to climb up but scary going back down - I made use of Lloyd and my rope just as a precaution. The final climb up the steep slope to the ruin was a little sketchy in a couple of places where it was difficult to find hand holds. Fortunately the trail has been used so frequently that all the thorns have been worn off the hand holds on the brush branches. We enjoyed exploring the ruins and talking to the three guys in the other hiking group. They left before us but we caught up with them below the first waterfall - one of their group (Larry) had badly sprained his ankle in a fall on the water slicked rock. They had just made it past the most risky obstacles and I suspect he let his guard down. I loaned him my trekking poles and a fleece pull over and offered to use my emergency locater to get help. But the three of them said they would be OK so Lloyd and I headed for the trail head and our camp. They showed up about 2.5 hours later well after dark but were in good spirits knowing that ample pain killer was available. They headed off in their car down Cherry Creek road and Lloyd and I settled in for an evening meal of barbequed rib eye steak, potatoes with sour cream and chives, and some Shiraz to wash it all down. We camped there for the night and headed up to Pueblo Canyon the next day.
