The trail was crowded by White Mountain standards - saw about 8-10 people during the hike. In the past I might have seen one or two.
This is the first time I've been in this area since the Wallow Fire, and to be honest, I was expecting a lot worse. The trees on either side of the valley are pretty well burned, but right along the trail there is only sporadic damage. The trail does grow pretty faint in the grassy areas, but I noticed this before the fire, too. It's still almost impossible to get lost. One thing that caught my attention along the hike was a "crack" sound back in the forest that I initially though was just a hunter until I heard what sounded like a MASSIVE tree crash to the ground. Be careful out here!
Was originally planning on continuing along the West Fork trail, but it was getting warm (mid 80s), so instead I hiked part way along the loop trail, then came back to the river to soak my feet for awhile. Man that water felt good! Returned the south half along the trail, then climbed up to the railroad and back to the parking lot. |
