Got a bit lost on the way back (remember to not be stupid like me and look for the spot where you left the wash for the dry river on your way in) and ended up hiking up and down to various high-points to spot my car (or, barring that, the golf course to the west) to slowly tack my way back to the trailhead. Finally ended up spending a good amount of time off-trail as a result and, right when I was losing my energy, happened upon a good-sezed gila monster right in the middle of a small footpath we were on! He slowly lumbered under a nearby bush before giving a nice, throaty hiss at us (which Wally returned with a spirited growl.) Didn't get many good shots of the gila monster as I was tethered to the dog at the moment and not entirely convinced that he wouldn't do something stupid resulting in my carrying out not only my pack but also a 50lb dog with a gila monster attached to his face.
Either way, the falls were very picturesque and nicely secluded for so close to the city. Moreover, I got to check off my holy grail of AZ hiking-- spotting my first gila monster. So cool... so very cool! |
