How this place isn't more famous is beyond me. The Roman emperor Constantine was actually born in Naissus, which is now Nis, Serbia, where my wife is from. This place was more or less his summer home, and passed on down a couple generations before it got ransacked by the Huns. It was discovered in the 1930s and excavated somewhat. There are still areas that haven't been properly excavated. Alot of what you see in these pictures isn't original. Some "restoration" work was done to make it more obvious how it was laid out. The mosaics are original, as are the marble pillars. I think the grey stone that the pillars sat on might have been original. While we were there, they were in the process of excavating an original structure that looked to mainly be made of river rock and mortar. The ruins here are about 1700 years old, as opposed to the 700-800 that we normally see in AZ. |
