| no partners | | I just found out about this hike a month ago and it immediately turned into a "must do" hike for me and my family. this is really a great hike for kids. That is, kids who are at least 5. The drop on the loose rocks at the start and the few spots with the low ceilings don't really make this friendly for pre-toddlers.
The monsoon has some on and off rain thru the day when we showed up, making this a great choice. Being Labor Day weekend, we had already encountered alot of traffic and crowds everywhere we were prior, and this was obviously no exception.
After the initial descent, the going was smooth enough to be able to enjoy the views if you let your headlamp peer into the darkness.
I opted to wear a hardhat for this after reading some of the triplogs and I'm really glad I did. There were several spots where I smacked my head off the ceiling and it didn't hurt a bit. About 2 min into the hike, there was a kid who smacked his head and was crying. We saw that scene repeated several times with kids and adults through the rest of the hike.
On the ascent out, once you get that initial glimpse of daylight after 2 hours in darkness it was really nice to see that again. Funny how it was suddenly so nice to see daylight even though the darkness wasn't really bothersome. |
