There were some campers at the TH who told us they just saw 15 turkeys to the south. Once we got up on the ridge on the trail, we heard them and walked off trail over to the ridge and spotted two of them. Once they saw us, they quickly flew away.
We got confused once we got near the trail junction with the Derrick Trail. I had only downloaded Joe's Derrick Horton Super Loop trail which didn't have the Highline on it past the trail junction. But once we got there, it seemed by looking at the topo and my Garmin mapping that showed the Highline that we passed the junction. Alex checked the coordinates on his GPS vs. the NG map he had and all info pointed towards the fact that we were already on the Derrick Trail and had missed the junction. so we decided to head back and try to find the junction, which of course we never did. Once I downloaded the track on my Delorme program and compared it to my track of the Derrick-Horton loop I did 7 years ago, I could see that we were all of about 500 feet short of the actual trail junction. Oh well.
Our hiking pace was pretty slow. Neither of us had done a big hike in well over a month and we spent most of our time talking and hiking at a very leisurely pace. |
