The forecast was for some clouds and a high of 95. Cool enough to hike the Superstitions but I didn't need a coat. We left Mesa at 5:00A and started hiking about 6:40a. Once we started down Peters trail we could see the grasses and catclaw had grown from the recent rains, the vegetation was wet and there was water in most of the pools. We saw a few old bear scats but nothing very recent. Denny and I tried to find Jesse Capen's campsite from a photo. We couldn't find the spot but as fate would have it we later found out why. We hiked up and back from near Kane Spring and decided once and for all to find the Miller Mines on the way out. We looked a little before but after checking the map I realized we were going left and the first fence crossing and we needed to wait for the second fence crossing. We hiked up and located the gravesite and found one mine on the south side of the JF trail. The mine is mostly filled in but there a sink hole, a stake, a mining car rail and obvious tailings. We proceeded over to the north side of the JF trail and found three more mines. One of the mines is partly open but you would need to crawl in so we opted for talking a photo. There are a lot of tin cans, a mount for some machinery and various other scraps. We hiked up the hill and were once again at the gravesite. It was starting to warm up so we headed out at this point. The JF trail was loose from recent run off but we made good time hiking the road. There were clouds off and on and a fairly constant breeze blowing on the trip out so it was as good as could be expected. Denny offered to by wings at Filly's so we left with a plan. Once at Filly's we saw Sendo's yellow Cherokee in the lot. After we ordered Roger and SSAR group come over to our table and we talked about Jesse Capen and that's when we found the camp was past Kane Spring beyond the ridge so we had not hiked in far enough. In addition there's a monument out near the mines markings Earnest Martin's grave too that we missed. Always more stuff the find... Thanks for the wings Denny.
