FR627 had a few pot holes but was easily negotiated in the families Honda Odyssey. The trail starts following an abandoned road through thick forest but soon breaks out into a large meadow. Bismarck Lake is actually a pond or tank formed by an earthen dam. The open meadow makes for great views of the nearby Kachina Peaks to the south. This was an easy enjoyable scenic hike. With some exploring of a side trail that follows a side meadow into the forest we managed to double the distance to 3 miles. The photoset includes photos from my solo hike on July 26 to check out the trail before the family arrived and a family hike on July 29. |
