Climbing up the saddle surprised by a large rottwelier approaching, thankfully the owner was directly behind him (ha!). Whenever I meet someone on the trail the first inclination is to say: are you on HAZ? (Is there a Todd with a rott named Sam in the house?) Following the gps route up to the base of Battleship had been easy up to this point, of course it became a challenge later. At a couple spots I didn't know which way to go, the trail ended in a wall without many handholds. Was this the way? I didn't see cairns at the top of the wall so tried going around to the left, no that better not be it! Did some backtracking a few times on this hike, climbing that wall I found a cairn. At some point on the mountain I started singing the J.Geils tune "Musta got lost". That song stayed in my head for some time, plus talked aloud about which way to go. Finally I made it to the end of the mountain, grateful I had found the safe route, but also knowing it would be a challenge going back. Great views all around, rained a couple times just briefly, even a little snowfall. Thought I would run into someone on the mountain but I saw no one; cold and windy, enjoyed a long lunch and then headed back. GPS proved helpful in crossing Boulder Creek where I had traversed in the morning, keeping me dry. Long slog out but happy to have finally hiked the Battleship. |
