This was the first attempt for both my Dad & I to hike/climb/scramble battleship mountain. The first ~4 miles or so were easy and well marked (Second water trail & boulder canyon). However, the turn off from the boulder canyon trail to where you cross the creek one last time and start climbing up to the stern of the ship isn't obvious. There was a small cairn and a half erased arrow in the sand. Luckily I knew the mileage where the turn off was supposed to be so we were able to figure it out. Also, the other difficult route-finding was figuring out where to head left again to actually get to the stern of the ship. We followed the trail about 15 minutes too long, and ended up started descending down the canyon on the other side of the ship. After this 25 minute delay we made it to the stern of the ship. Being first timers, we relied on previous trip logs that we had read to try and figure things out from here. Boarding the ship was interesting, as at first we thought we could follow the western ridge, but that looked pretty dicey. Finally we relied we had to do a short scramble in order to board the ship.

After that, we used the wisdom from previous battleshipers -- to always stop, think and analyze the best way to go. Almost always there was an easy path -- sometimes you just had to find it.

Unfortunately, we didn't make it all the way to the end of the ship. We were starting to hit out time limit (6 hours total), and my Dad didn't like the narrow connecting ridge. However, realizing how close we came, we will come back soon, and complete the entire trip (without getting lost) in our 6 hour goal!

For veterans, after the narrow connecting ridge how much further do we have time wise? Also, is it more difficult from there, or more of the same? It could be misleading, but things look a bit dicey after the connecting ridge. Do you keep following the western ridge from that point or head straight up?

Having hiked Angel's landing in Zion before, this hike seems somewhat like the Angel's landing of Arizona.

If you are in decent shape, limit breaks, and know the route, 6 hours is a good time benchmark.
