cactuscat and i have done several adventures together, but nothing in the superstitions yet
making the most of her visit to the valley, we chose this classic
jess came along and proved to be a strong hiker and climber
very nice to meet you, jess
got back from my NE holiday trip at 7:00 p.m. on new year's, then had to be at work at midnight
bailed on my co-workers and had one more large coffee so we could hit the trail by 10:00
second water was cool and breezy and very pleasant
stopped at a neat little pool up a drainage just off the trail
hiking with kelly provides lots of moments like that, finding things that i don't often take the time for
boulder creek was flowing nicely, and the lake still has quite a bit of water in it
the cutoff up to the stern of the ship seems to elude me
i've taken tough_boots' path with johnlp, and joe's bushwhack with johnr1 and tibber
we looked for the path, but ended up doing the bushwhack
wasn't bad, and we made the alcove before long
after a view-admiring break, moved on to route-finding, scrambling and climbing the battleship
had just one moment of having to figure out the route, but between kelly and i, we did well
spent some time at the summit, and found several of our haz members in the log
route-finding is always easier descending
out of the blue, jess spotted the ram
we flushed him out of his hiding spot, and he ran right by us and down the ridgeline
awesome to see such a magnificent animal so close, and unbelievable how quickly he moves
he got up ahead, looked back several times to keep an eye on us, then went down a ledge and headed back up to his home
so cool
this time we found the easier path and made our way back to boulder creek
note to self for next time
took a break on the slick rock near the second water intersection
we were initially wondering if we would make it back before dark, but after the grind up second water from boulder creek, enjoyed the dusk in garden valley
love this hike, and had a great time with two great partners!
kelly, can't wait until our grand canyon backpack
jess, we'll hook up again sometime - let me know when you pick out your screen name for haz :)
