| no partners | | Another perfect day for hiking in the Superstitions! After the last couple hikes to Weavers I figured it was now or never to try Battleship. Mike was nice enough to go back again and show me the way! We made good time out of First Water TH, had fun hopping across all the water in Boulder Creek and got up the saddle to the bow. I was pretty stoked until Mike says "here's our first climb" pointing to a 15 foot vertical wall! "Just kidding!" Good one man, you got me!! 
We made it up on top and were soon talking to Mr. Squishy (HAZ member from Alaska) as it turned out. He had spent the night and was heading over towards Peter's Mesa to stay tonight since he had plenty of supplies. We were back on our way soon and going across a small spine. Took it slow and got across, then the scrambling fun began. There is a lot more elevation change up there than I expected! Soon we were across the big spine and heading for the summit. Had a nice lunch break there, explored out to the north end and then headed back. Battleship is even cooler than I imagined!
We decided to go check out LaBarge so we headed down from the saddle and into the canyon. The water was so nice and cold that we both enjoyed a splash on the face and a soaking of the cap (or two or three or four!). We turned around at the big pool around the corner then stopped in the shade near the entrance to have a snack and enjoy the sound of flowing water.
We made it back up and over the saddle and should have probably headed for home but we decided to head south on Boulder Creek. It was fun, especially watching Mike run across the creek crossings like someone hit the fast-forward button on a movie!! By the time we hit the Dutchman though, we were both ready to be done! We won't make that mistake again! But it was my longest hike so at least now I know my limit!
All in all a great day though! Thanks again Mike for showing me the way!!  |
