| partners | | This was my first hike in the Canyon. My 65 year old uncle Gerald had this on his bucket list, and I was pleased to be part of his wish. We left Phoenix at 0500 and drove to the the North Rim, we arrived around 0900. Of course the weather was cold, 28 upon arrival. The anticipation was killing us, we hit the trail quickly.
When I stood at the top of the TH, I was thinking.....what have I gotten myself into? It looked straight down, and it kinda was. I have sporadic IT band issues on both knees, I was concerned going down. This was my first hiking using trekking poles, what a life saver. By the look on the faces of people going up, I knew we were in store for a long day
We hit Indian Springs relatively quick and stopped for a food break. One of the local squirrels robbed me blind, my bag of salty nuts never had a chance From here we headed out to the Plateau Trail and enjoyed the roar of the Colorado River. It was going on 1330, so we decided to head back.
The return was pleasant until we started the intense elevation gain, just past the Ranger Station. At this point, my legs were barking at me....Gerald was starting to slow as well, after all he is 65
After the 3 mile rest stop, my right hip flexor started to ache badly that last 3 miles was indeed rough, this is where my mental thoughts had to outweigh my aching legs. For some of the members at HAZ, this hike is probably a walk in the park. Honestly, this was my longest and by far toughest hike.....I did it and Uncle Gerald made his wish come true
What a rewarding and exhausting day! The 75 mile drive to Flagstaff could not come fast enough. |
