Met up with Larry and his buddy Todd from Kingman on day two of my weekend getaway to the canyon. We chose Battleship because it's a reasonably short day hike. Chumley and I were planning on driving back to Phoenix later in the afternoon.

We started around 9am and cruised down the BA Trail. Most of the snow and ice melted and the going was very easy. We picked up the Battleship Route around the 2 mile turn and started traversing the Supai. I found some cairns that led me along the high route while Larry stayed on the low route which proved to be much easier. The high route was constantly winding up and down and sucked energy. Eventually I down climbed to the low route. Stay on the low route if you make this hike.

We reached the saddle and then started making our way around the east side of Battleship and made our way up towards the base. After several minutes I finally caught a glimpse of "the duck" that is used to reach summit. It helped having Larry point out the easiest route. We started the climb up which was easy at first. After some work we made our way up the squeeze to what Larry calls "The Crux". I would guess the climb to be 10-12 feet and it's a bit tricky. We all left our packs below and this made the climb a little easier. I made my way up first followed by Todd and then Larry. Once above this obstacle the rest of the climb is a breeze and we found ourselves on the summit.

Once on the summit I signed the register and took a look around. There are inscriptions in the rock that date back over 100 years. Some of them are faded and hard to read. We took a group photo and spent a few minutes soaking in the views and decided to head down. I went first while Larry and Todd ate a quick snack. I cruised to the The Crux and thought about the best way down. There really isn't one! I started the down climb and had to turn my body several different ways in order to maintain a good hold. This obstacle is a rush and I was glad when I was back on solid ground. I finished off the climb sections and waited a few minutes for Larry and Todd to arrive.

On the return we all stuck together on the low route and cruised back to BA. Once back to BA we took a short break at 1.5 mile rest house. From there I put headphones on and made my way back to the rim. Once back on the rim I stopped by the BCO for some overnight permits for mid-May and then met up with Chumley. We said our goodbyes to Haley and then drove to Flag for some pizza and wings with Larry and were back in Phoenix later that night. I love these weekend getaways to the canyon!
