My GC buddy Rick sent me an email earlier this week asking if I'd join him on his 6th R2R...I accepted...however, this would be my 1st R2R; in fact, despite numerous backpacking/dayhiking adventures in the GC, this would be my first time on the NK - I was pretty excited.
Rick picked me up at 3:am and we drove to the North Rim, our starting point. (His wife graciously went with us and would drive back to South Rim to pick us up that evening.)
We hit the NK trail at 7am, just about 1st light. As I hiked the NK, I became very intrigued with all the day hiking/exploration possibilities from Cottonwood...let the permit process begin!!!
Total hiking time was around 11 hours (9 on the trail), we took several breaks at Roaring Falls House, PR and IG.
I developed a hot-spot around mile 15 (river) which, untreated, turned into a sizable, painful blister by the time we topped out...6pm.
Weather was awesome, cool temps and a lot of cloud cover. Finished the day off with a great meal from Mama Burger in Flagstaff!!! |
