| no partners | | My oldest son and I started at Peralta TH at about 5:50am. It was cool – about 55 degrees when we started and the sun wasn’t even up yet. I took the climb slowly, and stopped frequently to catch my breath (and let my heart stop pounding!), and made it to Fremont Pass (about 1,300 ft climb) in about 90 minutes, a distance of about 2.25 miles. I was amazed I made it so fast. I expected to take much longer.
From then on, it was mostly downhill, and a very nice day to hike. The sky was overcast, and I could barely see my shadow. We got lots of close-up pictures of Weaver’s Needle, and even saw a Gila monster! My first ever! (see the photoset)
We passed some people who told us they heard one rattlesnake and saw another. We kept our eyes peeled from that point on, but never saw one, thank goodness!
My dear sweet wife, daughter, and son-in-law left us a water cache about 1 mile in from First Water. We didn't need it. I started with 1½ gallons, and still had ½ gallon left.
I think had we tried hiking the other direction, with the gradual uphill all day long, it would have been worse.
I'm glad I didn't wait any longer in the season to hike in the Superstitions. Any later would have been too hot. |
