We left Mining Camp for Siphon Draw and turned right on Crosscut. A few minutes after we passed a giant boulder we found a route up to Spirit Canyon. We saw SAR helicopters on the way and soon saw SAR on foot way up canyon. We went straight up the wash, veered a little right, then climbed the ridge up to the base of Flatiron. With binoculars we noticed a strange formation so we descended the ridge heading west from the tip of Flatiron and dropped back down the Spirit Canyon side. After splitting up and searching, I located the rock hut (see pix). We climbed back up to the ridge and headed for the lower cliffs. Explored around those and then followed a nice trail that leads back to the very top of the basin (above all the loose stuff) and headed down on the Siphon Draw trail.
Without even using Spirit Canyon you could reverse our route and explore up to the base of Flatiron. It is worth it for sure!! |
