| no partners | | Had to get out and enjoy the day so I headed out from Mining Camp and took Crosscut south past Spirit Canyon. Coming out of the deepest drainage I went off-trail and headed for the mouth of Monument Canyon, passing a couple old campsites of broken glass and rusty tin cans along the way. I began climbing the north slope at the opening of Monument, my goal being the saddle that separates it from Spirit Canyon.
Without Mike along I got to practice my route finding skills, which is fun and a little nerve-racking at the same time. Not to mention that weird feeling of being off-trail and alone in an unfamiliar spot!
After making it through some tough spots I finally had the saddle in sight. Made it up there and took a break, took some pix and did a little re-con to figure out a way down! Heard running water in the canyon below too! I picked a good route down that only had minor scrambles and soon I was in a slick rock drainage. Thought I might have some trouble there but was able to get down without cliffing out. Found a cairned route out and headed for the car.
Spirit Canyon is a really cool place if you haven't been in there. I'm surprised it doesn't get more activity because it has lots going on! |
