Poor New Mexico must have thought I didn't like it anymore. Been to Texas and California, but no trips there this year. :o Well, I just remedied that with an interesting 5 day adventure! The main reason for this trip was to head up to Santa Fe to eat one last time at the legendary Bobcat Bite Restaurant, which will be closing June 9th. Not that Bonnie and John want to, but they are being forced out by the property owner in some sort of dispute. Word is they will relocate in downtown Santa Fe. But the old place has charm. Too bad. So I figured I would build a trip around this, with two nights in a motel in Santa Fe, and a night of camping on either side. That way I could break up the 510 mile drive to Santa Fe into smaller segments and get some hiking and sightseeing in too. I will begin with the last part of the trip. Spent Thursday night at Datil Well campground, one of my favorite stops. This was after leaving the motel and saying farewell to Santa Fe in the morning. Notice that I did this trip Monday to Friday, so as to get home when the holiday weekend begins and the maddening crowds head out (no thanks)! :D

Initially I thought I would just drive the 310 miles from Datil Well home straight through, but decided I had all day and was curious to get a look at some of the aftermath of last year's Whitewater Baldy Fire in the Mogollon Mountains/Gila Wilderness. I had always wanted to drive south from Reserve over to Willow Creek and see some of the northern portions of the Gila. (I had been as far as the Negrito Lookout before). So I headed south from Reserve on FR141 which eventually reaches Bursum Road (FR28) near the Negrito Fire Base. I had visited the Bearwallow Fire Lookout several years ago and had a nice visit with Marianne there, and was curious how it fared in the fire, so took a side trip up there on FR119 before reaching Willow Creek. This area had burned in the recent past, but once past Negrito I could see lots of new burn from the Whitewater Fire. Most of the buildings that burned last year were at Willow Creek. The fire lookout and historic cabins at Bearwallow were intact. Found out Marianne had retired two years ago, and the lookout and buildings had been wrapped and came though the blaze just fine. :) After a brief visit, I headed back down to Bursum Road via FR153. This section was in the fire's path. Views to the south toward Mogollon Baldy and east to Willow Creek and beyond showed how extensive the fire was. Following Bursum Road west toward Mogollon yielded more views of burned landscape. From Silver Creek Divide to Mogollon was as before, but areas to the south of the ridge and to the north were pretty well torched. The road was rough and dusty from all the flood damage that occurred post fire. I imagine it will get pretty well blasted again this summer when the rains come. :scared: The sleepy town of Mogollon had plenty of sandbags set up to help protect property. (I should have stopped for a burger at the Purple Onion because the meal I had later at Casa Manana in Safford was mediocre at best  )

Once back to Highway 180, I resumed my standard journey home by way of Mule Creek. The view of the southern flank of the Mogollon Mountains showed it was extensively burned. Yes, it was quite the fire, ranking as the largest in modern New Mexico history at 297,845 acres.
