Another trip to the place I have camped more than any other..Carr Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains. I feel so at peace down there! Knew there would be some weather potential with a low pressure area over Sonora ejecting out into the Plains overnight, so figured it was a good time for a visit. Sure enough, when I got up there around 3 o'clock clouds were beginning to build up. As sunset approached, some weak thunder was noted along with light rain showers. But the main event was the wind. It wasn't just outflow from the convection, it was steady strong wind associated with the low pressure system. It was about 73 degrees when I got there, then dropped to 60 around sunset in the showers (though the wind made it feel much cooler of course). The clouds cleared out shortly after dark, but the wind continued through the night into the next morning. It was 62 degrees when I crawled into the tent at 10 o'clock. The persistent wind kept the temperature from falling much. The overnight low was 58 degrees a bit after sunrise. Decided against going to Carr Peak due to the wind, but enjoyed my morning coffee, did some reading, then a couple of short hikes near the campground. :) Even though it was quite windy, the campground is somewhat sheltered and most of it was up at tree top level. The wind subsided by late morning and it stayed pleasant; it was 72 degrees when I left at 2 o'clock. I like this campground a little better than nearby Ramsey Vista at the end of the road, mainly because of the short walk from camp to some killer views of Sierra Vista and the proximity to Old Sawmill Spring. There are fantastic loop hike opportunities from both campgrounds. Oh, did I mention I like it down there?
