I had a ticket for the 2:30 PM departure. The museum runs a train down to the Mexican Border tunnel at Division on weekends. At one time before a tunnel in Mexico was damaged by fire, the train went all the way to Tecate, and included a stop at the brewery (and yes, just for fun I am enjoying a Tecate as I write this ). It is pretty much downhill from Hipass east of Campo to Tecate, so the train basically coasts to the tunnel before the engine is needed to haul it back uphill to Campo. It was nice to finally be able to ride on part of the original San Diego & Arizona rail line (John D Spreckels' magnificent obsession: "The Impossible Railroad"). I had been a fan of this line since I first saw parts of it in the early 1970's while driving along beautiful Highway 94 out of San Diego. One of the scheduled places the train sounds its horn is where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the tracks (caught that spot in my video).
A tour of the yard and vintage equipment followed the ride. Bought a few items in the gift shop, then headed to Cibbets Flat to camp. My weekend trip to check out the two railway museums was just about perfect!
