On my way back from another trip to Santa Fe to enjoy great food, I decided it was time to finally head up to Capilla Peak in the Manzano Mountains and perhaps meet the fire lookout. While on a Memorial Day weekend trip a few years ago with Cindy, I took her over see Quarai, one of the Salt Missions in the area. While in the gift shop at the visitor center I spotted a book about the life of a fire lookout, "Between Land & Sky" by Dixie Boyle. We were informed by the ranger that it was written by the person who works in the Capilla Lookout. I didn't purchase it then, but later picked up a copy. So, I had the book along this trip in hopes of meeting Dixie and getting my copy autographed. Her book came out in 2007, a year before the big fires blasted through the range. Though this triplog is listed as a scenic drive, it certainly could have been more scenic. The road to the lookout goes through miles of serious burn.

I stopped at the campground near the peak first, then parked at the locked gate on the road to the tower and walked up. I could hear the radio on, and a truck was there, so figured someone was home. Took more photos waiting for somebody to come out. Finally, I yelled up a hello. A woman appeared at the door and invited me up. Yay, it was the person I was looking for! :) I had a very nice long visit with Dixie and she told me all about the tense moments during the 2008 Trigo Fire. She grew up and lives in the area, so when fire season is over she volunteers at the Salt Missions (Abo, Quarai, and Gran Quivara). "Between Land & Sky" was her first book, but she has written more since then. Dixie told me I should check out the old cemetery down at Manzano just before reaching the highway, since I told her I liked the ancient Hispanic towns and villages in these parts, with generations of families going back hundreds of years living in the same general area. Following the great visit and getting the book autographed, it was off to do the short hike on the Gavilan Trail and then down to look for the cemetery, before heading to Socorro for dinner and on to Datil Well to camp.
