I knew that Take a Hike was coming down from Phoenix to do it, so figured I would give it a try and say hello to some of them I know. The reason I didn't sign up for the hike was I was unsure of my capabilies. I have been having a lot of problems with my right leg/knee lately, plus low energy, so I thought it would be best to head up by myself a little earlier. Turns out I had a pretty good day and basically made it up non stop! There were a few stops along the way to chat with folks, but otherwise I kept a steady though slow pace. (I finally gave in and have gone to the doctor to get some imaging/x-rays done on the leg to see what is going on. It is pretty frustrating not to be able to hike like I used to, but the chronic pain is what is finally driving me to take action).
Took a long time on the way down, since I wanted to wait for the Take a Hike folks to get back to Josephine Saddle. I was going to suggest an interesting return route from there, but turns out their group had a number of issues on the hike and had gotten very separated. So that idea was nixed. Nevertheless, it was a very interesting and nice day on the mountain. Glad I decided to go!
There has been some serious trail work on the Old Baldy Trail all the way to the top. In my 30+ years of hiking this thing I have never seen it in such good condition! I mean vegetation wasn't just trimmed it was removed for a good distance on either side, plus the trail itself has really been smoothed out. |
