| no partners | | We picked this hike as something local to do with the kids as a post Thanksgiving hike to burn off some of the deep fried turkey I made (which was incredible, BTW). As soon as we got there around 11am, I immediately realized what a mistake it was to some extent. The lot was full Well, not really, but we didn't thru it at first because I thought it was a gated community. I was last here about 10 years ago and the none of what's there now existed then. We ended up parking about a quarter mile down the road from the lot entrance.
Once we got on the trail, it was in full out ant trail mode. We stopped at the lookouts and took our time. Mainly it was a challenge watching out for the kids and making sure they stayed to the right, something my son is oblivious to. After a while, we got the hang of it. I was reminded why I prefer to hike way out in the wilderness, even on the most rugged trails.
We made it all the way to the end and headed back. On my way back, for whatever reason, I decided to turn on the jets for a rare occasion and hightail it back. Somewhat to my surprise, once I did this, I was able to very successfully pass everyone on the trail except for trail runners. I only had one person pass me and that was a runner. Some of the fast walkers had a tendency to try to walk faster when they heard me creeping up and trying to pass, but then they faded quickly once I was past. There was a good share of younger and in shape people, so I felt a little better about myself today as I slowly advance into middle age.  |
