About halfway in we met the first group of overnighters on their way out. Looked like a Boy Scout troop. Most of the rest of the overnighters we met on the descent into Hell's Hole. By the time we got there, we had the place to ourselves. All the campsites were empty, except someone left a tarp on the ground as well as some kind of wrapped up sleep pad or insulation. on our descent in, it seemed to me that the name Hell's Hole must come from the fact that there's a lot of red rock on the surround cliffs there and at that spot the walls get very steep, even vertical. At the bottom next to the creek in the shade seems like anything but hell to me.
It was a bit warmer on the way out, but the sun lit up the mountainsides making for some better pictures. About a quarter mile from the trailhead, Wally found an underground concrete vault with a rusty hatch. He had climbed down while waiting for me to catch up and checked it out. Inside there was a PVC pipe that led to another smaller vault with a hatch further downhill. Not sure if it's some kind of drainage device or what.
Stopped at the lovely Miami Circle K on the way back for a snack and took in the sights. Among the highlights was a guy with a reverse Mohawk and a guy start his old Ford pickup from under the hood. Then on the ride out, at the park towards downtown right along Rt. 60, we saw a guy in his 30's on the swingset swinging as far as he could go without falling. Seemed to be having a lot of fun. too much fun. Time to get back to the desert. |
