This hike was 2 years later to the day that the kids did their first hike with their new Camelbaks. They used them again today, and they're still in good shape. I was determined to make it a little bit of a longer hike than what they usually do. The goal was 6 miles, and the odometer on my GPS said we got 6.1, but once the track was saved, it was more like 5.7. Close enough.

We arrived at the Peralta TH right at noon. the upper lot was full, so we moved down to the lower lot. Just as we were about to start hiking, I saw a car driving down the road leaving. So we decided to quickly get in the car and hightail it back to the upper TH, where we got the last available space.

As I was signing in at the register, the Forest Service volunteer asked me where we planned and we started talking. soon enough he asked me, "You're on HikeArizona, aren't you?" This meant that he obviously knew who I was, since he had seen my vehicle and how me and the kids were dressed. It was mnlumberjack. We talked with him for a few more minutes and started on our way.

We took the Lost Dutchman Trail east across Barkley Basin, to the junction of the Coffee Flat Trail, and then hiked another 0.1 mile on the Coffee Flat where we took a break and ate the majority of our snacks.

During the hike, the kids kind of insisted on taking a small break every mile so they could rest. As we got farther out, they seemed to get more and more sluggish. I just figured it was because they were getting tired. But then as we were heading back, I noticed they perked up more and got a little faster as we got closer to the TH. On our first break on our way back for the farthest out mile, Dmitri said he was getting scared and was about to cry. I asked him what he was scared of, and he finally said he was afraid of getting eaten by a polar bear. Natasha and I both explained to him that polar bears don't live in the desert. I decided not to mention anything about the coyotes and mountain lions.

We got back to the TH without incident and made it home before dark.
