| partners | | Joel had to be on-call this weekend so he told me to do a hike that he didn't think I could complete. That was a challenge I just couldn't pass up.
We started out on the Wild Horse Trail in Saguaro National Park. Soon we found we were off trail in Wild Horse Canyon. It's a very beautiful canyon with a few problems that had to be worked or bypassed. We did a variety of both.
The vegetation was pretty aggressive...
We finally left the drainage and started to bushwhack for the peak. We head up steep hillsides, working our way around a couple cliff, and crawling through dense brush.
At one point, Amy screamed and pointed and we just couldn't comprehend what was wrong. Finally, we learned that at 6000 feet there was an Arizona Black Rattlesnake buzzing at us! January, 6000 feet, and with a patch of snow around the corner! Crazy reptile!
As we neared the peak things leveled out. However, the manzanita didn't get the message that they should be nice to us. I knew we were getting close to the trail and here I found myself crawling through manzanita with trucks the size of my thighs. They did not want to budget. If it had been an option, I think I would have sat and cried in defeat. However, that was not an option!
We finally found ourselves on top of Tanque Verde Peak at 2:15 PM. We had started hiking about 6:45 AM. What a long day! And we still had to get back to the trailhead and it was well over 10 miles away. We managed to get down in 4 hours! I do think that there will be 6 people who can barely walk tomorrow! |
