| no partners | | Performing a preview of our hike from Idaho Road to The Mask last Friday, we came across 42 hikers traveling north about 1/2 mile south of the NPS wildlife watering facility. When we arrived at Idaho road there were no cars so the hikers must have come from the Dome Mountain trail head. We wanted to find the route they took to arrive at the point where we saw them.
After parking at the Idaho road junction, we crossed the fence and took the immediate trail to the east that paralleled the dead end road. Eventually, we came to a point where we could see a block of quartz on the hillside which made us curious. We followed the trail to the east and verified that it would lead to Dome Mountain trail head. We backtracked and climbed up to the quartz peak and found an old mine behind it.
Then looking toward the north, we saw the arch that we often had seen on the drive down Wolverine Pass road to the Dome Mountain trail head. We walked to the Idaho road trail head and walked to the northeast wash that leads into the canyon behind the sculptured rock at the trail head. Last spring, Kay had observed an arch to the south as we climbed the wash into the canyon in the northwest. This is the same arch we saw yesterday and we found it to be the same arch we see on Wolverine Pass road. Kay was the first to see it last spring and finally has gotten her opportunity to see it close up. |
