| no partners | | Had the day off work and wanted a bit of solitude but didn't want to drive too far, and I'd been reading that this trail is pretty unpopulated. I came up the Ranger Trail, took the National up Goat Hill, then back on the National to Kiwanis and Los Lomitas back to the Five Tables parking lot. Nice warm day out, but very smoggy.
The climb up the Ranger Trail gave me a good workout. Gained a good amount of elevation in a short distance. The final short climb to the Goat Hill summit was very steep, but the views from the top were awesome. Saw a red-tailed hawk circling above me at the summit. Going back down the summit here seemed a little dangerous...I lost my footing a couple times but nothing major. I wouldn't recommend this section to clumsier folks, however. Lots of wildflowers out already (and bees!), especially on the south side of the mountain.
I saw 1 person the whole way from the trailhead to Goat Hill. Saw a handful of people on the National and Kiwanis trails. In total I saw maybe 10 people the whole hike. I'll probably try this same loop in CW order starting from Kiwanis next time...going up Kiwanis looked like it would be fun. |
