I realized today, doing this ride, which hooks up with the Cataract Lake area roads, that I might be able to ride a mountain bike all the way to Ash Fork, mostly on dirt. Part of it would be on this old RR grade, part on old Route 66, and any other roads I can find.
I looked at Google Earth. It appears that at some point just east of Welch Road I'd have to swing way north.
The advantage of doing this today was the gradual but unrelenting uphill grade for about 4 miles, giving me a needed workout on the bike. Then of course, when I turned around it was consistently downhill without being scary.
When I don't ride my bike for months I always need a lot of "bike time" to get my skills and my wind back. I like to train on this type of trail or road. Nothing technical, but it is pleasant scenery and gets the heart pumping. |
