With a long drive and long hike on deck for tomorrow, I wanted something close, short and yet challenging so I figured I'd do some more wandering around again in the Bulldog Canyon Off-Highway Area. I drove in on Forest Road 10 from the Bluepoint Gate until about a half-mile south of the intersection with FR3354, which comes in from the Usery Pass gate.

I've been interested in finding another route up and over into the Goldfield Mountains other than the very steep ravine another half-mile south, which we used when we hiked to Panorama Peak seven months ago.

Taking a quick scan of the slope I picked out two possible ascent routes and set off to try what looked to be the safest one. It worked out reasonably well until I checked out a cave that appeared to be used as a mountain lion den based on the scat around it.

I wanted to climb up right next to the cave but the slope got crumbly so I took a couple hundred foot detour to reach the next level. From there I continued up along the route I hoped to use, stopping at the base of the gray rock near the ridge. Not quite an hour into the hike I was thoroughly drenched due to the high level of humidity and starting after 10 am. It was over 60% around 7 am so I dawdled, hoping it would drop by time I hit the trail... but it was still higher than expected.

While taking a moment to catch my breath I heard a muffled sound to my right and as I turned to look, a Bighorn Sheep pops out onto a boulder and looks right at me. I snapped a few quick shots with my Olympus then switched to the Canon with the higher and much faster zoom and got off one shot before it looked ready to move, when I turned on the video. I got some good video of its descent, and later in the hike I will capture part of its ascent. After editing I ended up with just over 3 minutes.

It was so cool to see just how nimble they are, descending a slope without a slip in less than a minute (including 15 seconds to stop and look at me)... a slope that will take me twenty minutes, and I slipped many times, while breaking loose a few land-slides of rock.

I didn't complete my climb to the ridge due to my curiosity as to where the bighorn went. I assumed it went down to get some water but when I checked out the drainage later it was bone dry. Whatever it went down for, it started back up while I was still on the way down, which is when I filmed more video.

It attempted to climb up in the same spot by the cave that I tried and it came off with the same result... too loose. I could tell it wanted to come across the slope toward me along the route it had taken on the way down, but I was too close. Just as I was about to move farther away in hopes it would take that route it turned around and went up another way and eventually it moved out of sight.

After that, the rest of the hike was nothing but nice scenery, which was fine with me. All in all, a great hike in a short window of time.

Only 40 photos so I'll post all on HAZ.
