Timing seemed good to include a side trip to Bassett Peak to see the fall colors. One of my employees volunteered to come along. We made it a Hike, Chile Run combo.
Unfortunately upon arrival and a little ways up the trail we quickly realized our timing was premature for the good colors. Things are just barely starting to change now and I believe it will be another 10 to 14 days for them to be prime.
Bassett is a great hike anytime of year and Taylor (my employee) was loving the steady but manageable grade. As we came around the corner on the divide trail I pointed out the plane crash. He was intrigued and wanted to investigate it further.
We hit the summit which was a bit chilly and then made our way down to the crash site. This trip I spent a little more time looking things over. Wow that thing hit hard! I think this was the highlight of the hike for Taylor as he took several photos.
Afterwards we headed back down and then it was off to New Mexico. I may or may not go back again in a couple weeks. I am thinking maybe going for the colors but this time hitting Kennedy Peak. It's on my list of to do's. |
