| no partners | | Another section of Colorado River, or in this case, lake. This was a very pleasant day until the wind came up, making for quite a challenge paddling back up to Mesquite Cove where my car was parked. In the afternoon there was a stiff breeze with swells. I think most of the swells were caused by speedboats, which were a long way from me, thankfully. I keep close to shore for safety.
It was really fun to paddle through the channel and under the London Bridge. When I was 13 I visited England with my folks and walked across this same bridge. That was in 1966. The bridge was purchased by chainsaw magnate Robert B. McCulloch from the city of London in 1968, dismantled and shipped to its current location and reconstructed (minus a span or two as I recollect.)
I got as far as Rotary Park and turned around, finding a nicer beach on the Island with sand instead of mud. The nearby sandwich shop was closed, unfortunately, so I had to snack on what I had brought with me.
Heading back through the channel was easy enough but I could see by the flags above that the wind had picked up. I had a real push ahead of me to get back to Mesquite Bay once I was out of the channel and back in the main body of water. But I made it. I was pretty beat up, though--aching wrists and elbows.
I'll be looking for a couple of folks to paddle the section of lake between Rotary Park and Parker Dam. It's about a 3-day trip. There are BLM campsites along the shoreline. There is no road access for me to do it in short sections as I have been doing. |
