| no partners | | I have a little inflatable kayak which weighs only 32 pounds. I decided to paddle across the lake from Catfish Paradise to the river intake structure, where there is a portage trail. I would then portage across the levee (South Dike Road) and paddle down the next channel to Topock Marina and the Colorado River.
I accomplished the portage just fine, but got stuck in the mud almost immediately after paddling away from the shore on the other side. I tried going a little further, hoping for deeper water, to no avail, so I laboriously butt-scooted and pushed against the mud with my paddle, got myself turned around, and butt-scooted back. I re-portaged the boat, and then paddled a loop in the main bay of Topock Marsh.
The Colorado River has been running extremely low lately, and I will have to wait until (probably) March, when they usually ramp it up a bit, to try this portage again. The level of the marsh is dependent upon the river level.
I saw most of the usual birds--egrets, herons, coots, grebes, ducks, etc. |
