I've taken enough photos of the Estrellas from South Mountain/Ahwatukee, I decided I may as well hike up there. The hike itself is nice, the trail is decent and the views are very good. A LOT of "up". It was pretty windy today which was kind of unwelcome as much of the climb is fairly exposed.

I came in from the south and left via the north; I prefer the south. I would say either way requires high clearance and better yet 4WD, but there was a Nissan Murano at the trail head when I came down (with some really questionable street tires to boot), so maybe there is some route in that doesn't require high clearance. And if you are looking to add some cheap pin striping to your ride, this is a good option.

Overall, my thoughts are this: nice trail, really good work out that I wouldn't want to do every weekend (I'm not a peak bagger), but is definitely worth doing at least once. The real problem is getting there is somewhat of a slog. On balance I don't think the payoff is worth the drive.
