| partners | | Bruce recently got into the bingo & bridge scene. He needed to be home early to iron his plaid and mow his lawn in a nice criss cross pattern. So we picked a couple short hikes and played it by ear. Bingo champ was slightly antsy about the sand driving to the trailhead. Cars have made it so I tried to calm his nerves.
Temps simmered higher than expected heading up. While I'm not a fan of the drive nor the first mile, halfway up I get enthralled each time. Still feels like a double stacked Squaw ascent. The rock, vegetation, views, quartz and well defined trail make this one a winner. We checked out the mine on the return.
Headed home exhausted. It really doesn't matter if a hike is 4 or 40 miles. Mindset is the name of the game and this game was over. Tried a different road back. Sandy. Gokart narrow. Still shocked Bruce's truck squeezed by in places. Deeper sand. Nail biting up to this point. Bruce kept the momentum and the pinball in play. Miraculously conquered one swerve, then another. That was all she wrote, three swerves you're out!
We dug with our hands, pushed, rocked, gunned, cursed and ultimately made it work. Feel bad Bruce had to turn his day to day commuter into a rally truck. |
