| partners | | Cold, snowy forecast for San Francisco Peaks but most of it would pass before Saturday so we decided to give the San Francisco Peaks AZT# 34 a go. We also decided to split the section in two doing the northern half on Saturday with some lower elevation and about 16 miles long. As predicted snow level was around 7500 feet and our starting point was 8300 but fortunately the dirt road access FR 151 and 418 was relatively clear. From the start the trail drops so the snow started to disappear rapidly and within 2.5 miles it was mostly gone. The first 7 or 8 miles of this section is scenic with great views of San Francisco Peaks and today was even better with the new snowfall. However the trail eventually drops enough that the pines disappear and are replaced by juniper. The trail also turns into a network of old roads which also makes the hike less scenic. Afternoon we had a few sprinkles in the last 5 miles and the winds kicked up finally making it to the end a bit after 3pm. Headed back to Flag and Lumberyard for food and beverages  |
