Next morning we drove to the Babbitt Ranch TH. Very windy at the start but probably normal for this area. Babbitt Ranch is arguably the most boring section of Arizona Trail with the first 10 miles being on well graded dirt road. However it does get more scenic after that and the road becomes more trail like for long stretches. Originally we thought the heat might be a factor but it turned out that rain and cool temps was more the norm. It rained for a good 20 minutes between mile 7 and 8 but then only sprinkled off and on the rest of the way. Around mile 15 near Upper Lockwood Tank the trail follows some nice canyons for several miles until it reaches the forest boundary leaving Babbitt Ranch. Also at this point the trail leaves the road for the last 5 miles on single track which was definitely the nicest part. Serena mentioned that going north to south on Babbitt would be better because you have great views of San Francisco Peaks. This is very true so going south to north we would turn around occasionally to admire the snow covered peaks which made the long stretches of road somewhat more interesting. Finishing up at about 330 again we enjoyed a cold beverage and headed for the south end to pick up the other vehicle. |
