With the first 3.2 miles of AZT #40 already complete we had a jump on the next AZT section. The first attraction of the day was East Rim Viewpoint about 4 miles into the hike and if not for this area we wouldn't have seen any other hikers all day. The trail passes within 200 feet of the viewpoint parking area so we did see a few hikers but a lot less than I'd expect on holiday weekend. Great views along this section of North Canyon below and Saddle Mountain Wilderness. From there the trail heads away from the rim and begins to traverse several meadow valleys such as Tater Canyon and Pleasant Valley. We had lunch in Pleasant Valley with thunderstorms threatening but managed to stay dry. After lunch the trail runs very close to Hwy 67 over to Telephone Hill but still very cool section with the meadows similar to the drive into the park on the highway. However, after Telephone Hill we reached the burn area and everything opens up. We continued on about 7 miles into the burn section and also did the first 5 miles of section AZT#41. Towards the end the trail followed a well graded old road and wondering if it's the old park road prior to Hwy 67 being constructed. With another section down we headed into Jacob Lake for some supplies and to enjoy a burger at the restaurant before getting a jump on the next section north of highway 89A and car camp spot for the night.
