The start is within 1/2 mile of Parker Canyon Lake so there are good views of the area hiking the first 2 miles. Eventually the trail drops below Parker Canyon Lake and crosses the outlet stream at 2.5 miles...nice crossing with good flow in the creek. From here it's up a gradual 900 feet over next 4 miles. At first the trail follows a drainage that had intermittent pools for the first 3/4 mile. Then the trail climbs out of the drainage and follows a ridge up to a saddle marking the end of the climb at 6.3 miles. Dropping down into the next drainage we made our way over to a road that becomes AZT from mile 8 to 11. Around mile 10 we dropped into Middle Canyon which had some intermittent pools and would be timely water source if someone was through hiking. Just past this area it leaves road and back to single track about mile 11 and heads up a steep grade for the second real climb of the day. This climb tops out on the ridge at 5980 with great views of the Huachuca's to the east and San Rafael Valley to the south and west. From the high point it's about 2 miles to the TH and end of the section near Canelo Pass. Overall trail condition was really good with no tree fall or other obstructions. |
