It crosses Kenosha Pass and US 285, the main road between Fairplay and Denver, about half way through. We did it as a key exchange from the Rock Creek and Jefferson Lake Road Trailheads, with people jumping on and dropping off at Kenosha Pass. This is my new favorite portion of the Colorado Trail, because of its outstanding views, excellent trail conditions, and prolific wildflowers. I saw about a dozen squirrels. The only negative is that it also attracts lots of mountain bikers (most near Kenosha Pass), with whom you have to share the trail. We had a great day, even with the last couple of miles in the rain. Honestly, hiking doesn't get much better than this.
One precaution: watch the road in/out of Jefferson Lake off US 285. Some of the potholes will shake your teeth out. Also, highly recommend doing this during the week. Denver is only 70 miles to the east. Enough said. |
