Nice, but fairly difficult via ferrata in Canilo, up the road from Andorra de vella, especially when combined with Canal del Grau and the cable rappels on the way down the back side. The info I had said the best place to start is from the restaurant off the Canillo - Encamp road, but I walked down from the parking spot I used for Canal de Mora (a mistake but that's where my wife was waiting). That's why my elevation profile looks screwy.
Glad I had my rubber gloves on this one. The starting point is to the left of the first hairpin turn, but is difficult to find because of the steel cable netting that has been constructed to catch boulders off the mountain and poor signage. I made the mistake of starting up too soon and wound up intersecting the route a couple hundred feet up the very steep slope. Don't recommend scambling up the loose and unprotected slope of fragile volcanic rock and muddy grass. The climb is nice and varied in every respect, lots of vertical with lots of opportunities for using the rock as well as the iron rungs. Some interesting and "muscle" moves at several points. Lots of aerial (exposure), not a beginner's route by any stretch.
After reaching the top of Racons, I went over to the Canal del Grau, another aerial section that goes up a plug with a monkey bridge and a single cable requiring a pully. I didn't have a pully with me, so had to go back down at that point. Check out the pics. As I said, I didn't sty on route the whole way but my track should help find the area. Fantastic day in Andorra! |
