| no partners | | Mount Democrat is one of four fourteeners in the Mosquito Range south of Breckenridge, Colorado. It has a reputation of being relatively easy but rerouting because of lingering snow banks have created stretches of scree and boulders that are not easy to cross. Watch for people above you kicking loose rocks. Many people climb 2, 3 or all four of the fourteeners in one outing, starting with Democrat, then proceeding clockwise to Cameron, Lincoln, then Bross. A big sign near the Kite Lake Trailhead, which serves all four peaks, says there is a legal issue with access to Bross. However, there is a bypass that comes close to the summit and many people climb it also.
Access to Kite Lake is possible without 4WD or high clearance. Note that it costs $3.00 to park at the trailhead, with reductions for certain pass holders. You can park along the road about 200 yds before reaching the TH lot, and a short walk is needed up the road to reach the TH.
All in all, this was surprisingly difficult for the relatively small accumulated gain, but within reach of most hikers. Including some or all of the other three peaks makes it challenging day for all except the most hard core climbers. Some of our group did only Democrat, but four of the rest of us did Cameron also, for about 3700 feet aeg. I've posted gps tracks for Mount Democrat one-way, the RT for Democrat and Cameron, and for the road in from Alma.
