A thickly wooded ponderosa pine forest keeps the sun off for most of the hike. The Fortress at the end of the trail is well worth the effort getting there.
The humidity and higher than expected temps kept our shirts damp for most of the hike. Cooling breezes came and went. We found a nice breeze and some choice boulders to sit on just as we started back down, so we took a lunch break at 11:30.
The hike back down the mountain was warm in spots. We didn't remember being exposed to the sun on the way up, so we must have had decent cloud cover. It also seemed a lot steeper on the way down. My legs felt okay, but they were getting a workout coming down. I was beginning to wonder if I would have enough for a second or possibly third hike that Bruce scoped out for us today.
I liked this hike a lot and would certainly do it again. |
